Gauteng raider Kangaroo Jack sprang through from off the pace to upset the fancied runners and score an easy win in the R400 000, Grade 2 Post Merchants at Greyville on Friday evening.

From the stable of Gary Alexander and under Craig Zackey, the three-year-old son of Querari caused an upset when completing a hat-trick of wins to beat the Jet Master Mare Fly By Night and Asstar with favourite Ferrie filling fourth place.

Ferrie, the young sprinting star from the Dennis Drier stable and the Dean Kannemeyer-trained In Full Flight Handicap winner Captain Alfredo had been seen, along with Red Ray from the Joey Ramsden stable and the Mike Bass runner Fly By Night, as those most likely to fight it out for the winner’s purse but it was not to be.

Buckland from the Sean Tarry yard set a cracking gallop ahead of Ferrie, London Call and Aurum Pot but when they hit the home straight Zackey sent Kangaroo Jack for the line and he tore through the field to win as he liked. MJ Byleveld chose to move Fly By Night to the outside and she ran on well for second with Asstar making a game challenge for third place.

After the race jockey Zackey said the performance of his mount was no surprise to him as the gelding had put up amazing work and it was a very special way he won. Dean Alexander, representing his brother Gary, said Kangaroo Jack had been progressing and getting stronger and owner Mrs J Wallace had a lovely horse on her hands.
