Draw ceremony Vodacom Durban July 2017

July post-draw comments

What the connections had to say after the 2017 Vodacom Durban July draw:

[1] MARINARESCO

Assistance trainer Robert Fayd’Herbe: Marinaresco is doing well at home, his work has been good and all is very much on song,” said Fayd’Herbe, Candice Bass- Robinson’s KZN assistant.

Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson: “Nine is a perfect draw for Marinaresco. He has to be given a chance and half to three-quarters the way back is where he needs to be ridden.”

Jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe: “I have still to study what is around me but I am happy enough with nine – it’s certainly better than ten and upwards.”

[2] FRENCH NAVY – comments to follow

[3] MASTER SABINA

Trainer Justin Snaith: Doing well. As a two-time Summer Cup winner I think he is well weighted on 57.5kg. He’ll run his race. Don’t worry about the draw. All can change in a matter of seconds.

[4] BRAZUCA – comments to follow

[5] KRAMBAMBULI

Trainer Justin Snaith: Has not come off the bit in his last two wins. I know it was against weaker but he has done nothing wrong. It will not be easy at the weights and he will need a pace. I think he will tuck in at the back of the field to save energy and look for a strong finish.

[6] SARATOGA DANCER

Trainer Duncan Howells: His last run was a bit disappointing but all that is now behind him. His work is very good and is back to his normal, honest self.

[7] THE CONGLOMERATE

Trainer Joey Ramsden: I was very happy with his last run. He ran a good race without hammering him. He’s in good order. Anton (Marcus) thought about riding him but eventually stuck to the other horse (Edict Of Nantes).

[8] IT’S MY TURN

Trainer Justin Snaith: Nicely in (at the weights). I purposely missed the Gold Challenge because we didn’t want any more penalties. He needed the Betting Word 1900 badly but is doing good work at home. His biggest asset is Piere Strydom. He’s the right guy for a big race.

[9] TEN GUN SALUTE

Trainer Duncan Howells: Has come through the Betting World 1900 very well and has recovered from his back problem. He is doing very well.

[10] NIGHTINGALE

Assistance trainer Robert Fayd’Herbe: “I am very happy with Nightingale. She is doing very well at home and has had a nice prep. She is coming well at the right time.

[11] BLACK ARTHUR

Trainer Justin Snaith: Have aimed him specifically for the July. He’s the horse to beat. He’s a huge runner off 54.5kg. Horses run for Grant van Niekerk and he can ride him confidently. Of the older horses he’s the right horse. There are lots of big races in the winter season but really this is the race we all want to win and you have to sneak into the race off the best weight that you can.

Jockey Grant van Niekerk: Drawn 11 and 17 on close-seconds Smanjemanje and Marinaresco, said of Black Arthur’s eight draw:  “I am very happy. Thank you Justin Snaith!”

[12] EDICT OF NANTES

Trainer Brett Crawford: My stable is in top form at the moment and I am very happy with my horses. Edict has come through his last run like he never had a run – he is very well.

[13] AL SAHEM – comments to follow

[14] MR WINSOME

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer: I’m very happy with his 1900 performance. That’s what made me think of supplementing him for the July. He is well weighted and is a tough, sound and consistent horse. I won this race two years ago with Power King off a similar weight so I don’t think that he’s without a chance.

[15] ELUSIVE SILVA

Trainer Justin Snaith: He’s beautifully weighted and is a 2200m plus horse. He missed the Cape summer because of injury and off 53kg he is a huge runner. All my horses are well in at the weights.

[16] PAGODA

Trainer Geoff Woodruff: Was all at sea at Greyville when having his first run here but is bound to improve from the outing. Off a low weight should run well with Al Sahem – if he (Al Sahem) has a chance, so should Pagoda.

[17] TILBURY FORT

Jockey Greg Cheyne: Was satisfied with Tilbury Fort’s 11 slot, saying: “He will come in one when the reserves come out and I started from ten when I won on Big City Life in 2009.”

[18] SAFE HARBOUR – comments to follow

[19 – Reserve] HORIZON

Assistance trainer Robert Fayd’Herbe: Doing well, had three runs here in KZN – he is fit and well and all is going well with him. Hopefully he gets in, if he does, he will be a big runner at the weights.

[20 – Reserve] NEBULA

Trainer Brett Crawford: Is fit and well but unlikely to run. Not sure where we go from here. We still have to decide.

Piere Strydom on Captain Splendid

Strydom in splendid form

When Piere Strydom landed at Durban’s King Shaka Airport last Saturday and heard his mount in Race 4 at Greyville had been scratched, he began questioning his decision to fly down for the race meeting.

“When I [initially] looked at my rides I thought that [Race 4] was my only chance for a winner. Now it was scratched,” Strydom said. But by the time he had left Greyville Racecourse to return to the airport that evening he had ridden two Graded stakes winners, Lady Of The House in the Gr1 Woolavington 2000 and Captain Splendid in the Gr 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup.

Strydom’s two winners would not have delighted too many punters as Lady Of The House went off unfancied at around 20-1 and you get close to 10-1 on Captain Splendid. But riding fans would have worn out the replay button.

Strydom had to overcome draw 15 with Lady Of The House and wasted little time getting his mount into the lead in what looked a sedate pace. “They didn’t go that slow but the track was fast,” said Strydom. “I was told I could use her early on because she stays and is super fit.”

What punters did not know is that his saddle slipped shortly after the start. “That was a concern to me because when she started to hang in late in the race I wasn’t really able to ride her too vigorously.”

As a result, she hung in late and came together with 33-10 shot Gimme Six but stayed on to win by a head. Anthony Delpech lodged an objection against Lady Of The House but it was overruled.

As far as the Lonsdale was concerned, Strydom says he was told that Captain Splendid’s work had improved tremendously since his last run. “He was held on form so that must have made the difference,” he added.

Strydom is back at Greyville on Saturday, June 10, for the big Rising Sun racemeeting where he is carded to ride Janoobi in the Gr1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge and Silver Mountain in the Gr2 Tibouchina Stakes. For final fields visit http://www.goldcircle.co.za/champions-season-2/rising-sun-gold-challenge/

Ten Gun rises to the occasion

Ten Gun Salute, amongst the fancied runners for last year’s Vodacom Durban July but in the doldrums since, burst onto the scene for this year’s edition with a scintillating performance in the Gr2 Betting World 1900 at Greyville on Friday night. Re-united with Muzi Yeni at the insistence of owner Heinrich Kuhn, the Duncan Howells-trained Ten Gun Salute blew away a high-class field that included current July ante-post favourite Elusive Silva.

Quoted at 80-1 before Friday, Track & Ball cut him to a still fairly generous 25-1 yesterday with Elusive Silva drifting to 10-1 and Marinaresco and Al Sahem firming slightly to 13-2, pretty skinny odds with five weeks still to the big race.

But it was touch-and-go whether Ten Gun Salute took his place in Friday’s line-up. “Two weeks ago he was a doubtful starter,” said Howells. “He pulled a back muscle in the Drill Hall Stakes and didn’t work for three or four days. “I had the physio work on him – Beth Shaw did a fantastic job – and then we worked him twice a day for the last week.”

“I was still in two minds but I trotted him out yesterday (Thursday) morning and he was sound so I thought, ‘what the hell’ and we took our chances.”

It proved an inspired decision. Racing well of the pace and wide for much of the early exchanges, Ten Gun Salute had two behind him turning for home. But Yeni set him alight as the field swung for home and the response was instant. Ten Gun quickly got the measure of the opposition in spite of drifting in and won in exceptional fashion.

“We always thought he was a good horse and he showed me what he is made of,” said Yeni. “I turned for home and got there a bit quicker than I wanted to. The pace was not genuine – it was quite slow –  and I was sitting three wide at one stage. His turn of foot was amazing.”

“We always thought highly of him. At least I know how to ride him now. Last year (in the July) I had him a little too close. If he gives the same type of finish he is a massive runner.”

As expected, Serissa set the pace for stable companion Tilbury Fort and it all worked out nicely for them except that Ten Gun Salute left Tilbury Fort for dead at the top of the straight. Tilbury Fort, always handy, stayed on for second while It’s My Turn was plugging on gamely in third. Mr Winsome also ran on well from behind for third while race favourite, Elusive Silva, turned for home ahead of Ten Gun but was blown away.

The 1900 was the only race run on the turf following torrential rains the previous week with the balance of the 10-race card switched to the poly track to avoid excessive damage to the turf surface.

Johan Janse van Vuuren has a small string based at Ashburton and Crowd Pleaser made all the running to win the Allowance Plate over 1800m. He was never really pressured and got home comfortably under Warren Kennedy. Investec Derby winner Edict Of Nantes, giving the winner 6kg, was doing his best work late, in a smart warm-up for the Gr1 Daily News 2000, impressing bookmakers who cut his odds to 11-1.

Favourite Secret Captain was one-paced throughout in a disappointing showing and there must now be doubts about his ability to stay further than a “mile” at this stage of his career. Howells, his voice but a rasping whisper after Friday’s urgings, said yesterday that he did not know what to make of the run. “He was staying on but didn’t quicken. He’s still immature and I think he will be a better horse next year.”

But as far as bookmakers were concerned, Nebula put up the best performance of the evening. A record priced yearling in his day, he has some way to go before recouping his R3,75 million purchase price but quickened smartly to land the Pinnacles Stakes over 1600m. “I thought it was a good effort,” said Peter Muscutt, assistant to Brett Crawford. “He took a heavy fall at his last start and it’s good to see that he has not lost his confidence.”

On Friday morning Nebula was on offer at 66-1 in the July ante-post market and Track & Ball slashed his odds to 16-1 come midnight.

Last year’s July winner The Conglomerate, raced handy throughout but was never in the hunt for the winner’s cheque as Anton Marcus nursed him home under a few back-handers. An each-way nibble at 33-1 may not be a sign of madness.

At Scottsville on Saturday, biggest upset of the day came in the opening leg of the Place Accumulator as rank outsider The Dazzler lived up to his name for owner/trainer and Winning Ways presenter James Goodman. Paying over R50 on the tote and having his first outing, The Dazzler showed an excellent turn of foot under replacement rider Keagan de Melo, who didn’t have to raise his crop in anger.

“I thought he was decent but we were taking on a strong field,” said Goodman. “We were up against winners and I thought third or fourth would be a good effort.”

It was more than just a good effort, and with a pedigree that suggests a ‘mile and further’ The Dazzler is one for the notebook.

VDJ Barometer – May 19

Difficult weather conditions over this past week will have put a kink in many a preparation for tomorrow’s Greyville racing but it is still mouth-watering stuff as a host of Vodacom Durban July hopefuls line up.

Because of the inclement weather, the majority of the races have been moved to the poly surface but the three races that count remain on the turf including the G2 Betting World 1900. The race is loaded with July hopefuls who are either warming up or looking to gallop open a place in the July field.

The Justin Snaith trio of It’s My Turn, Prince Of Wales and Elusive Silva are all border-line cases. It’s My Turn and Elusive Silva are 18 and 16 respectively in the current July log while Prince Of Wales is among the five just out of the 20 horses on the log.

Geoff Woodruff saddles Master Switch, currently 20th on the log, who has shown up well in his two starts this year but is another needing a forward showing.

Ten Gun Salute, a July runner last year, is older and stronger but probably needs to win or finish in the first three to have a chance of making the July field. His last outing in the Drill Hall Stakes is best ignored as he tweaked a back muscle.

Banner Hill has come good this winter, winning a handicap in good fashion, but like Ten Gun Salute will need a win here or in the Cup Trial to enhance his chances of making the July field.

Rocketball has gone off the boil and would be a surprise winner, tomorrow or on July 1. Macduff has been close-up behind Met winner Whisky Baron in the past and could be a surprise package. Tilbury Fort, Copper Pot and Jubilee Line are three others for which this race could be make-or-break although the two former could still have a shot in the Gr1 Daily News 2000.

Some have taken a slightly easier route in the Allowance Plate. Investec Derby winner Edict Of Nantes, sixth on the July log, looks assured of a place and as he has not been out since his Derby win in January, this is a likely warm-up. Not so for Bold Viking and Secret Captain, although both are likely entries for the Gr1 Daily News 2000.

Finally, last year’s Vodacom Durban July winner, The Conglomerate, has been carefully placed by Joey Ramsden and is an interesting runner in the Pinnacle Stakes where other July entries include Nebula and Royal Badge.

Smart Call (Liesl King)

Stoute happy with Smart Call

Smart Call, the 2016 Met winner, is set to make her re-appearance on the racetrack in the Gr2 Betfred Middleton Stakes over 2050m at York Racecourse in the UK on Thursday.

Jessica Slack’s wonderful five-year-old mare had her initial Breeders’ Cup campaign interrupted when she suffered a muscle injury to her near hind last October and trainer Alec Laird didn’t want to rush her, opting instead for a rest and recovery.

Smart Call was transferred to Sir Michael Stoute’s Newmarket stable early this year and Steven Jell, representing Slack this week, commented: “Sir Michael is a nice, down to earth man. He is happy with the progress Smart Call has made. It’s a small, strong field and the objective is to get her through this race, to see how she goes. She looks good.”

Trainer John Gosden’s lightly raced four-year-old So Mi Dar, who races for Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber, tops the boards at 1-1, with Stoute’s other runner Queen’s Trust at 9-4. She won last year’s Breeders’ Cup  Filly and Mare Turf for Frankie Dettori, who hops on the Gosden favourite and is replaced by Ryan Moore. Stoute has booked Jim Crowley for Smart Call, who is generally on offer at 12-1.

The Middleton Stakes is off at 3.55pm, SA time.

Geoff Woodruff

Woodruff, all systems Go!

High-flying Highveld trainer Geoff Woodruff has two runners in Friday night’s Betting World 1900 on the Greyville turf, the geldings Master Switch and Go Deputy.

Unlike the KZN-based horses, whose programs have been affected by the heavy rains over the last week, they have not missed any work as they have been prepared for the race at Randjesfontein. However, Woodruff admitted to being concerned by their wide draws and the going conditions on the rain affected track.

On the latter point the pair were not bothered by the “very soft” conditions in their last start in a Pinnacle Stakes event over 1800m on Turffontein Standside. Master Switch appeared to have that race in the bag after quickening well from the back of the field. However, Go Direct then came flying out of the pack to nab him on the line.

Woodruff said about Go Direct, “He is just a lovely little horse who is very honest. I told Marco (Van Rensburg) to wait with him for as long as possible. He was never out of his ground.”

At first sight it appeared Go Direct had needed every inch of the long Turffontein straight, but bearing Woodruff’s clarifying comment in mind he should have no problem with the short Greyville straight.

However, Woodruff admitted he would need luck in running from draw 13. He is only 1kg worse off with Master Switch for the neck beating and has clearly come into his own in the typical fashion of a Go Deputy four-year-old. Van Rensburg retains the ride.

Woodruff said Go Direct had not been a Vodacom Durban July consideration before that last win, but were he to win tomorrow night he would be supplemented for the big race.

Master Switch has run twice at Greyville before. He was backed into 7/1 third favourite for last season’s 1900 and ran a touch disappointingly, finishing a 4,7 length seventh. He stayed on at one pace from a good draw that night. Then on July day he missed the break, a rarity for him, in the Gr 3 Delta Airlines 2200. He then over raced at the back of the field, so did well to run on for a 3,6 length fifth. Woodruff believed he would have won the race had he not missed the break.

Chase Maujean had no problem settling Master Switch in that last start at Turffontein, which augurs well for the horse tomorrow night. Anton Marcus is now aboard the Mayfair Speculators-owned five-year-old Jet Master gelding and might well opt to drop him out from his draw of nine, because with the front-running Serissa in the field there should be a decent pace.

Woodruff confirmed Master Switch had improved in the last 12 months. The pair were being transported down to KZN on Wednesday. Woodruff has boxes at Summerveld for the Champions Season, but will raid for his campaigners’ first runs and then keep them at Summerveld from then onwards.

Master Switch is the 1900 second favourite at 7/2 with the sponsor and Go Direct is at 16/1. Master Switch was in 20th place on the first July log, so will need a big run to book his place. He is currently a 35/1 shot for the July.

Woodruff has just come off another big race win on the Highveld, landing the R4 million Premier’s Champions Challenge with Deo Juvente, who started the race at 25/1 and upset the Equus Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle. That saw Deo Juvente being put in number one spot on the July log and he is also now the joint highest rated entry on 115. Woodruff said Deo Juvente had come out of the race “very well.” However, he will have a tough task carrying topweight in the July and Betting World currently have him at 33/1.

David Thiselton

Banner Hill rising

The Glen Kotzen-trained Banner Hill has become a Vodacom Durban July dark horse since winning his SA Champions Season pipe opener over 1800m on the Greyville turf in impressive style on April 9.

The four-year-old Maine Chance Farms-bred Tiger Hill gelding will attempt to qualify for the big race on Friday night at Greyville, where he runs in the Gr 2 Betting World 1900.

Kotzen said, “He had always been our Gold Cup horse. But, when he won that 1800m race we opted for the July route. He now just has to run a cracker from a wide draw on Friday night. He is absolutely flying at home. He likes to run fresh, so we have given him a breather since that last win.”

The latter point might give him an edge, because the big rains over the last week have prevented any KZN horses from doing full work. Furthermore, the likely soft conditions tomorrow night will make the race more testing, which will play into his hands as he is a versatile type who has won from 1600m up to 3200m. Lastly, that 1800m win at Greyville was in “very soft” going, so he will enjoy the going conditions.

Banner Hill’s win on April 9 was his first outing since winning the Gr 3 Chairmans Cup over 3200m at Kenilworth. He raced off a 93 merit rating in the MR 93 1800m-handicap, meaning he had to carry topweight of 60kg. The long-striding bay went handy from draw five and was suited by a good pace. This allowed him to turn it on impressively at the top of the straight and from there on in he stayed on resolutely to win by 2,75 lengths.

Banner Hill has been raised to a 99 merit rating and faces a considerably stronger field tomorrow night. He did not feature in the first July log, so will need a big run. He jumps from draw 15 of 15, but a big plus point is that the world class Richard Fourie remains aboard. He will need a strong pace and could be vulnerable to horses which quicken well. However, he will be staying all the way to the line.

Banner Hill’s sire Tiger Hill stands in Germany at Gestüt Fährhof, owned by Andreas Jacobs, who owns Maine Chance Farms in South Africa. This Danehill stallion won three Grade 1s between one mile two furlongs (2000m) and one mile four furlongs (2400m) in the late 1990s. In 1998 he finished a one length third in the Prix de l’Arc de  Triomphe and the following year finished fifth in that elite event. As a sire Tiger Hill has produced the like of Rewilding, whose two Gr 1 wins include the Dubai Sheema Classic over a mile and four furlongs and Royal Ascot’s Prince Of Wales Stakes over a mile and two furlongs. Rewilding also finished third in the Investec Epsom Derby.

Kotzen secured Banner Hill for R200,000 at the CTS Premier Yearling Sale in 2014.

Banner Hill was an August 1 foal but started his career late, in the December of his three-year-old year, for two reasons. He injured himself one day after breaking loose and he is also a late maturing type. Kotzen confirmed Banner Hill was currently improving “month by month.”

Betting World are taking little chance with Banner Hill and have priced him up at 8/1 for the 1900 and 55/1 for the July.
