Woodruff buoyed by Switch

Geoff Woodruff has been “encouraged” by the recent form of his Gr 2 Betting World 1900 contender Master Switch, who arrived at Summerveld from Randjesfontein on Tuesday evening.

Woodruff said Anton Marcus’ decision to ride The Conglomerate in the race did have  a bit to do with the weights, as Master Switch had originally been set to carry 54kg, before the weights were dragged up 2kg due to none of the runners being in the 110-114 merit rated band. However, his big race rider Callan Murray knows him well from training track work.

The four-year-old Jet Master gelding looks to be going the right way, but Woodruff said the race would tell how good he was. He is versatile in style, having done well from the front, from handy and from off the pace.

Master Switch was raised six points to a 98 merit rating for his win last time out at Turffontein over 2000m. He drew away well to beat Fort Meyers by 1,5 lengths in that race on April 16. However, the latter could only manage a 1,9 length third, albeit off a three point higher merit rating, in a handicap over 2000m at the Vaal on Tuesday.

However, Sean Tarry named Master Switch as one of the horses to beat in the 1900 earlier this week, so clearly has a good regard for Fort Meyers.

Master Switch carries 56kg and is officially 0,5kg under sufferance. He has a plum draw of three and is 14/1 with the race sponsor.

Favourite Tripandie causes chaos

Since cutting formal ties with the powerful Mike de Kock yard and going freelance early in the season, Anthony Delpech has not looked back. He is an important cog in the Dean Kannemeyer operation that has been a main source of his many winners but along with agent Deez Dayanand, they have cherry-picked with great success.

It was an up-and-down afternoon at Greyville yesterday when favourite Gregorian Chant failed to deliver and found to be lame post-race after the first and hot favourite Tripandie dug in his toes and refused to load for the seventh. But these were mere hiccups as he was in front of the microphone for the third and followed up just for good measure.

Tripandie, looking for his fourth win on the bounce, was in short order for the 99 Divided Handicap but refused point blank to take his place in the line-up resulting in him being scratched.

Captain-Chaos

Captain Chaos (Nkosi Hlophe)

But whether he would have matched the finishing effort of the Mark Dixon-trained Captain Chaos is debateable. Since arriving in the Dixon yard for the season from Ronnie Sheehan in Cape Town, Captain Chaos has taken time to find his feet, but back to a sprint he landed running yesterday.

“Today was the first time I was happy with the horse. He had put on condition, his coat had come right and his work on the poly was phenominal. With myself and Kegan we said if he doesn’t run well today then we are really in trouble,” he said.

“He arrived with a big reputation,” said Kegan de Melo, “but he was not putting in what he was showing in work. I think the blinkers did the trick.”

Highway Explorer pinched an early lead at the top of the straight but was running on memory at the furlong marker as Captain Chaoas was produced with a telling finish by De Melo. Psycho Syd gave MJ Byleveld a torrid ride but stayed on to finish a well-beaten second.

Doug Campbell, in the second box after the first as King Of Scots found the De Kock-trained Coyote, a pick-up ride for Anton Marcus, just too good was lavish in his praise after Delpech produced Golden Fort with a perfectly timed run to out-do Roy’s Sailor and Just Positive. “It’s wonderful to have a top jockey,” said Campbell and it appeared that he needed him. “He’s a big boy, very strong,” said Delpech of Golden Fort after punching the gelding out to the line hands and heels. “He still doesn’t know how to race. He has his head in the air and I didn’t want to hit him. It doesn’t do these types of horses any good.” By Elusive Fort, Golden Fort was home-bred by Claire and William Meyer on their farm outside of Mooi River.

Delpech was back in front of the cameras 30 minutes later but having to work much harder on the Des Egdes-trained Just Rap who held off the attentions of Brave And Bold and peace-making favourite La Gitano. “It was a cracking ride by Anthony,” enthused Egdes who is always lavish with his instructions. “Des told me to stay out of the kick-back so I was happy to be three wide,” said the rider, “but I had to work hard for this one.”

Silver Inspiration was given a patient ride by Warren Kennedy for Chris Erasmus and owners Koos de Klerk and Bruce le Roux in the fifth.  Being Julia tried a repeat of her end-to-end victory last time out but came up empty as Silver Inspiration ran her down and Airtime finished off her race nicely to relegate her to third.

Hardly a meeting passes without apprentice Lyle Hewitson making a visit to the winner’s box and he picked up another on a chance ride for Pal Lafferty and prolific owner Roy Moodley. Admittedly the scratching of the fancied runners Surrey and Shenyang opened the door for Roy’s Strike Force but the son of Lecture quickened away smartly at the top of the straight and won unchallenged.

Value about Greek Legend

Mike Azzie’s Gr 2 Betting World 1900 contender Greek Legend will officially be 2kg under sufferance in Friday night’s race at Greyville, but Azzie regards this son of Black Minnaloushe as “way better” than his current 91 merit rating.

He elaborated, “We always rated Greek Legend better than Deputy Jud before he was hurt, and Deputy Jud finished third in the Gr 1 SA Classic and second in the Gr 1 SA Derby (before winning the Gr 2 Supreme Cup over 1450m on the Vaal sand).”

Greek Legend arrived at Summerveld the week after his win at Turffontein on April 30. That day, in a MR 102 handicap over 1600m, the blinkered gelding was making steady progress down the straight, but was a bit tight for room. However, when seeing daylight he found another rocket-like gear, which propelled him to the front from a seemingly beaten position.

He suffered a suspensory injury midway through his three-year-old season and his last outing was only his third run since February 2015.

He appears to be thriving at Summerveld and Azzie said, “He has improved a lot in soundness and fitness. He is eating well and has shed the winter coat he had, his coat now has a lovely sheen to it.”

Jockey JP van der Merwe mentioned only two horses he rides which could be followed for the rest of the season when being interviewed shortly after his J&B Met victory on Smart Call. One of them was Greek Legend.

From a draw of three and carrying only 54kg, Greek Legend looks to be a big runner tomorrow night, provided he takes to the new course and the lights, and as one who relaxes superbly in the running and has a fine turn of foot there is no reason why he shouldn’t.

Legislate to stand at Drakenstein

Legislate, winner of the 2014 Vodacom Durban July, has been retired to stud.

Connections discussed his retirement after trainer Justin Snaith reported after last Friday’s Drill Hall Stakes that Legislate’s blood picture was not ideal. And it was agreed that Legislate be sent to Drakenstein to let down for his stud career.

Snaith was keen to have his superstar have another go at Grade 1 glory during South Africa’s Champions Season because he felt that he had got the horse back to his best.

Snaith said: “I was blessed to have ridden this superstar myself and cannot imagine that there are many thoroughbreds that glide the way he does. He floats and covers more ground than any horse I have ever seen in South Africa. He has the temperament of a champion which I am sure he will pass on to his offspring.”

Legislate was the 2014 Horse of The Year, won four Grade 1 races and earned over R5,5million in stakes.

Paul Lafferty with Harry's Son

Harry’s adventure moves to Spain

Loredo, Spain – Harry’s Son is trotting again after a small abscess on his right foot was caught early, treated and burst last week.

Assistant trainer Roy Waugh, who is enjoying his adventure with Harry’s Son, reported on trainer Paul Lafferty’s website that he will start tuning Harry’s Son up next week – a bit later than expected – in preparation for his comeback late next month. Harry’s Son was given a holiday after an “intensive” Dubai campaign.

Before the abscess, Harry’s Son was being given light work, “trotting and paddling in the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean”.

“He has gained weight quickly and has already been put on a calorie restricted diet!” wrote Waugh. “He appears very content, displaying overly boisterous and ebullient behaviour whenever he greets me, a sure sign all is well. I have added fresh dandelion leaves and clover leaves to his diet which has gone down particularly well with our man Harry!”

According to Waugh, Harry’s Son will probably run over 1600m at the “revived” Madrid Racecourse in a Grade A race before heading off to race in France in July and August.

“We plan on taking Harry to the Madrid Racecourse at the end of May to show him the course. From what I have seen from the live racing telecasts, it looks a very good surface and quite a nice wide track with a fairly short run in of around 450m, exiting a left hand turn. And by June, we are most likely to be running on good-to-firm ground.

“There is a chance we may look at two international races at Woodbine and Keeneland in September and October but this will largely depend on the outcome of his European races,” he reported. “If he races well in (Europe), there are quite a few options in France and Germany with excellent purses that may prove more prudent alternatives, especially given the travel and quarantine protocol involved in traveling to the US. There is only so much you can ask a racehorse to take after all.”

Snaith eyes another EC Derby

Justin Snaith will be three-handed in his bid to win a fourth East Cape Derby in Sunday’s World Sports Betting-sponsored Fairview feature. He runs Elusive Silva (Bernard Fayd’Herbe), More Than Grand (Callan Murray) and Captain Splendid (Lyle Hewitson).

Snaith said: “Bernard likes Elusive Silva and so he might be the pick of  the three. The horse was very unlucky in the Winter Guineas last time.”

Cape Town trainers have won the last six runnings and ten of the last 11 but their challenge is not as strong this time – at least numerically. Andre Nel with course winner Solana (Aldo Domeyer) is the only other with a runner.

Michael Clower

Seventh Plain (Nkosi Hlophe)

Seventh Plain ‘doing well’

Dennis Drier might still have three runners in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint at Scottsville’s Festival Of Speed meeting on June 4, despite Triptique proving with his excellent running on third in the Gr 2 IOS Drill Hall Stakes on Friday he is more than just a sprinter.

Dual Gr 1 winner Seventh Plain was struck down by a “nasty virus” recently, but has recovered and is “doing well”. He might be back in time for the Tsogo Sun. He won the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion over the same course and distance last year and the track and distance perfectly suits his style, in which he has good cruising speed and a powerful kick.

Triptique might go for both the Tsogo Sun Sprint and the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge. Jockey Sean Veale describes him as a honest horse and added, “He will easily stay a mile, he has been running like a horse who needs the mile.”

Meanwhile, Barbosa has come out of his excellent third in the Gr 1 WSB Computaform Sprint very well and should be a big runner in the Tsogo Sun, having escaped any raise to his existing 108 merit rating.

Triptique earned the maximum five point raise for his Drill Hall run, in accordance with the new handicapping guidelines for a second-placed horse in a Gr 2. He is now merit rated 106.

Seventh Plain (Nkosi Hlophe)

Seventh Plain (Nkosi Hlophe)

Seventh Plain could be well weighted in the Tsogo Sun off a 107 merit rating, having been dropped from a high of 110 due to three slightly disappointing runs in Cape Town. However, that campaign was geared around the CTS Million Dollar over 1400m and he is likely more comfortable over 1200m.

Furthermore, the last horse to do the Medallion/Tsogo Sun Sprint double was Delago Deluxe and he won the latter race off a 108 merit rating.

Both Drier and Veale confirmed Punta Arenas had needed the run in the Drill Hall, where he finished a 7,15 length eighth.

Drier will run him in the Gr 3 Cup Trial and then into the July, in which he was an unlucky runner up last year. However, his 18th position on the first July log makes him a borderline case for qualification.

Drier’s Gr 1-winning filly Chestnuts ‘N Pearls has had chips removed from her joints and reappears on 20th May in a Conditions Plate for fillies and mares over 1400m on the Greyville turf.

The useful middle distance filly Gathering Fame, who defended her Listed Jamaica Handicap crown at Kenilworth in January, also reappears on the 20th in the Listed KRA East Coast Cup over 2000m on the turf.

Kennedy has tough choice

Gavin Van Zyl stable jockey Warren Kennedy faces a difficult choice of ride for the forthcoming Gr 1 Daily News 2000, an always vital Vodacom Durban July pointer which is to be run at Greyville on May 28.

Meanwhile, Anton Marcus was impressed by Rabada’s run in the Gr 2 Canon Guineas on Friday night and Geoff Woodruff revealed the respective routes his Vodacom Durban July entries Deo Juvente and Master Sabina would be taking.

Kennedy always knew the Van Zyl-trained Rocketball would stay the 2450m trip of the Gr 1 SA Derby and also knew the field would come back to him due to the furious pace up front. However, he was surprised by how easily the horse had made up the ground under a tight hold. Abashiri then went tearing past and opened up a two length lead at which point Kennedy thought he would be running for second.

However, in the end he nearly caught the Triple Crown hero. With both of their heads down all the way to the line neither jockey knew who had won and Kennedy answered Karl Zechner’s question in the pull up by saying, “I think I might have got it.” Zechner had been under enormous pressure throughout the day and his relief moments later was palpable.

However, Kennedy did question the strength of the Derby field beyond the first three finishers.

The Van Zyl-trained Celtic Captain, on the other hand, faced a strong field on Friday night in the Gr 2 Canon Guineas and finished a decent 2,3 length sixth.

Kennedy said, “He moved through beautifully and struck the front comfortably, but just as he did so he lifted his head and wanted to move outward. I think he might have seen the big TV screen.”

Stablemate Redcarpet Captain bounced back to form and stayed on well for a 2,65 length eighth. Jockey Keagan de Melo believes he will stay the 2000m trip of the Daily News. However, Kennedy felt it would not be wise to opt for Redcarpet Captain for the Daily News as a horse with a stamina question mark.

He concluded by saying he would likely be asked to ride Rocketball again, although he could not separate him from Celtic Captain, whose dam won over 2400m and who should still be improving after recent gelding.

Marcus was impressed Rabada had stayed on for second on Friday night, despite having to be used early to overcome his draw and find a handy position. He pointed out the two horses ahead of him in the running of the fast paced race had finished close to last. However, he felt Black Arthur would be tough to beat in the Daily News.

Woodruff said Deo Juvente’s only preparation race into the July would be the Gr 3 Jubilee at Turffontein on June 12, which significantly takes place after the publication of the July weights. Sansui Summer Cup winner Master Sabina will race in a Pinnacle Stakes event as his July preparation.
