MARIO FERREIRA

Owner of the Month – November 2015

MARIO FERREIRA

For a man who has “not yet been bitten by the racing bug”, Gauteng businessman Mario has invested heavily in the sport in the two years since being talked into becoming a racehorse owner and currently has “60 or 70” horses which he races throughout the country in various stables.

During the month three of his horses won in KwaZulu-Natal, two from the yard of Dennis Bosch, contributing to his 41 winners to date.

His string is managed by Des Gonsalves who has been in racing for more than 40 years and who said the coming year could be even more rewarding for Mario who has purchased a number of yearlings to add to his stock.

Well done Mario.

ALYSON WRIGHT

Trainer of the Month – November 2015

ALYSON WRIGHT

Champion trainer Sean Tarry had an incredible month with 11 winners and another 11 places while Charles Laird and Duncan Howells did well with eight and seven winners respectively.

But having a less formidable string with which to work, Alyson turned her charges out in top condition to reward her in winning six races and finishing in the placings on another nine occasions for a win-place strike rate of 55.56%. Her loyal followers had their rewards as well with a R1 win bet on each of her 27 runners giving them a profit of R31.80.

Her dedication and professionalism are worthy of this month’s award.

Well done Alyson.

ANTON MARCUS

Jockey of the Month – November 2015

ANTON MARCUS

It is said that jockeys are only as good as the horses they ride but there are times when jockeys get horses to win that really shouldn’t. That is the talent that Anton displays on so many occasions and it showed again during the month when 77.55% of the horses he rode finished in the money.

From his 49 rides, 18 found the winner’s enclosure and a further 20 ran into the placings which is one of the best records ever posted by a jockey.

His knowledge of pace and the ability to extract the best from his mounts through perfect balance and positioning in a race are talents that place him in a league of his own and worthy of this month’s award.

Well done Anton.

GEOFF PERKINS

Owner of the Month – October 2015

GEOFF PERKINS

A second bite at the sport of horseracing has put a smile on the face of owner Geoff Perkins who has enjoyed considerable success since becoming an owner about three years ago.

As a young man he worked as assistant to trained Gary Rich but in his early twenties he moved to other interests and is now involved in property development. But because of his love of animals in general and the thoroughbred in particular, he was persuaded about three years ago to become involved in the filly Lady Carter that won three races for him.

“Lady Carter was my first horse and she won in her first race for me.”

Geoff did not have the most winners in the month but achieved what few can only dream about – three maiden winners including the Ideal World filly Free State that won on her first visit to the race track.

Now involved with about 20 horses spread among a number of trainers, Geoff has had about 15 winners in his short spell as an owner and is looking forward to many more.

Well done Geoff.

DEAN KANNEMEYER

Trainer of the Month – October 2015

DEAN KANNEMYER

Since opening his satellite yard in KwaZulu-Natal Dean has made an incredible impact on racing in the province and winning the Vodacom Durban July has not been enough. His runners have continued to perform well and that continued through into the month under review.

He has drawn a strong team of supporters and those that have followed his stable have been well rewarded.

During the month eight of his 25 runners won and another eight finished in the placings at a win and place percentage of 64%. Those that wagered a win bet on each of his runners would have had a R20.10 return in the month.

Well done Dean.

Jockey Alec Forbes

Jockey of the Month – October 2015

ALEC FORBES

It was a very competitive month and, as expected, top riders Anthony Delpech and Anton Marcus topped the winner’s table with 12 and 11 winners respectively.

Making full use of the opportunities given him, Alec had a great month as well and he steered 10 of his 50 rides into the winner’s enclosure with another 14 of his mounts finishing in the money.

A quiet man, Alec has proven his ability to match it with the best of them and is sought after by a number of trainers for his dedicated and professional manner.

Well done Alec.

Roy Moodley

Owner of the Month – September 2015

ROY MOODLEY

His passion for the sport of racing has made him one of the leading and most successful thoroughbred owners in the country with hundreds of winners since embarking on his favourite pastime in 1994.

As one of the biggest owners in the country with more than 100 horses carrying his colours, he has enjoyed a high degree of success and during this month had six winners in the province. They were Roy’s Guardian, Royal Colours, Roy’s Gul Gul Ha, Roy’s Doctor, Royal Kaitrina and Roy’s Strike Force.

His breeding operation in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has produced many of his winners and with such dedication to the sport of horseracing his success is well deserved.

Well done Roy.

SEAN TARRY

Trainer of the Month – September 2015

SEAN TARRY

He is the new Champion Trainer in South Africa and has started the new season in fine style with his record for the month being outstanding.

While he could not match Dennis Drier in the number of winners, his win-place strike rate was magnificent with six winners and eight placings from just 19 runners and a percentage in the money of 73.68.

It was a performance befitting a champion and worthy of the award.

Well done Sean.

IAN STURGEON

Jockey of the Month – September 2015

IAN STURGEON

After showing promise as a young rider, Ian drifted somewhat into the wilderness of the jockey ranks but in recent times has rejuvenated his career with some great rides that showcased the talent this likable man with the engaging smile has to offer.

With greater opportunities he has demonstrated that talent with some brilliant riding, strong finishes and booting home nine winners with 13 of his other rides finishing in the placings is an effort worthy of the award.

Well done Ian.

Markus Jooste

Owner of the Month – August 2015

MARKUS JOOSTE

The Gold Circle Owner Award for the month has been bestowed on Markus Jooste

There has never been an owner in the history of South African racing that has played such a dominant role in the sport as Markus Jooste has with his massive string or horses spread across training yards in virtually every racing region in the country.

His generosity in supporting a variety of stables with high-class thoroughbreds is unique and his enormous investment in racing and breeding has added a new dimension to the industry in the quality of racing and breeding stock.

Racing mainly in partnership with his wife Ingrid, they have been the leading owners in the country for some years and they have more than deserved the success they have enjoyed.

In the past month Markus was involved in five winners in the province – Night Trip in his own colours, Exit Here, and Rabada, Brutal Force and Stormy Eclipse in partnership with Ingrid.

His involvement and support of racing in South Africa is greatly appreciated by all and his success in the past month worthy of the award.

Well done Markus.
