Captain Of All (Nkosi Hlophe)

Captain looks to stamp his authority

The Dennis Drier-trained dual Gr 1-winner Captain Of All will stake a claim to be named the best sprinter in the country at Greyville on Saturday when lining up in the weight for age Gr 1 Mercury Sprint over 1200m.

The four-year-old Captain Al colt carried topweight to an impressive victory in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m last time out and worked like a bomb in his final serious preparation gallop on the top sand track at Summerveld yesterday under his big race rider Sean Cormack.

Drier said, “He’s come out of his last run like a dream. His final sprint up this morning (Tuesday) was out of the top drawer and let’s hope we can pull it off and send him off to stud on a high note. He’s an absolute gentleman, he’s an easy horse to ride and in the Gr 1 Premier’s Championship over 1400m (which he ran in as a two-year-old after winning the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville) he was beaten short-head, short-head in the soft, nothing wrong with that performance, so I’m sure Greyville will be no issue for him at all.”

Drier also regards his barrier position of seven in the eleven horse field as a “fantastic draw”.

The bay is quite tall and is powerfully built, a really good looking specimen, and on weight for age terms he won’t be easy to beat.

Captain Of All is competing for Equus Champion Sprinter with the two three-year-old fillies Alboran Sea and Carry On Alice. The former has been retired and the latter is running in The Mercury.

Captain of All failed by a whisker to catch Alboran Sea in the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championships over 1000m, with Carry On Alice third, and was beaten 4 lengths and 3,3 lengths respectively by the pair in the Gr 1 Computaform Sprint over 1000m.

His subsequent Tsogo Sun win over 1200m was a fantastic performance, but interestingly Carry On Alice’s time in the Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint on the same day over the same trip, in which she beat Alboran Sea, was run in a time 0,07 seconds quicker than Captain Of All’s. Furthermore, she will now be receiving both an age and a gender allowance, which together add up to 3kg, so on paper she is the main danger.

Drier runs the four-year-old Solskjaer filly Red Label in the Listed Off To Stud Stakes over 1600m on the polytrack. She was beaten 1,75 lengths over the course and distance by Euphoria last time out and will now be 1kg worse off because the suppressed, banded merit-rating handicap conditions of this race favour the higher merit rated horses. Furthermore, she has landed a wide draw, although in her favour is that she clearly loves the poly. She is effective over this trip and stayed on well last time, although she might possibly prefer 1400m.

Legislate (Liesl King)

Media Release: Legislate to take on SA’s top sprinters in this year’s Mercury Sprint

The 2014 Vodacom Durban July and recent Rising Sun Gold Challenge winner Legislate is taking on some of the country’s top sprinters in South Africa’s premier speed event, the R750 000, Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1 200m at Greyville on Saturday.

For whatever reason, Cape trainer Justin Snaith is pitting the reigning Horse Of The Year against winner of the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint winner Captain Of All from the Dennis Drier stable at level weights over the tight Greyville track adding an unexpected element to the famous sprinting event that will be run at the central Durban venue for the first time since the closure of Clairwood.

The field for the country’s top weight-for-age sprint has trimmed down to a fascinating mix of speed and stamina with the versatile sprinter-miler Willow Magic from the Sean Tarry stable included among the 11 runners.

Legislate is a miler with plenty of toe as he showed when smashing the Kenilworth 1 600m record when winning the Green Point Stakes and Snaith’s decision not to run him in the Vodacom Durban July which he won last year but put him up against the speed horses in this 1 200m race is an interesting development. Snaith is reported as saying that if he comes out of this race without a problem, he will run him in the Champions Cup at Greyville over 1 800m the following week.

Captain Of All won the Grade 1 Tsogo Sprint at Scottsville in fine style stamping himself as a contender for the EQUUS Sprinter Of The Year award and a win in Saturday’s race could well give him an edge over Alboran Sea that beat him in both his “away” races, the Betting World Cape Flying Championship at Kenilworth and the Computaform Sprint at Turffontein.

Saturday’s field for the country’s top weight-for-age sprint also includes the first and second past the post in the Post Merchants, Daring Dave and Moofeed, the winner of the City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint Carry On Alice and the versatile sprinter-miler Willow Magic that finished second in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge and third in the Post Merchants.

It is an interesting and exciting field that heads an entertaining meeting where racegoers can win a share of R32 000 in Race and Win prizes including a stay at the Cascades Sun City and Spar grocery vouchers.

It is Mercury Sprint Day featuring the R750 000, Grade 1 Mercury Sprint where the best speed horses in the country come together to determine the “champion of speed” in the top weight-for-age sprint in the land while 12 of the best riders in South Africa will fight it out in the inaugural Interprov Rider Cup, the country’s first inter-provincial jockey challenge.

Three four-man teams of riders will compete over four races that include two feature events for total prize money of R100 000 and bragging rights in the Interprov Rider Cup with the KZN Falcons representing KwaZulu-Natal, the Highveld Hawks representing Gauteng and the Western Cape Eagles seeking glory for the south.

For racegoers there will also be plenty of action and entertainment with Race and Win prizes to the value of R32 000 up for grabs including a stay at the Cascades Sun City and Spar grocery vouches.

The Kidzone for the youngsters will be in operation along with the popular Braai Zone and Lightning Shot Bar with the entertainment for the day being by Khaya and Friends.

Brazuca (Nkosi Hlophe)

Media Release: Mercury Sprint Raceday

The flashy Australian-bred colt Brazuca, just touched off in a thrilling finish by favourite Seventh Plain in the R600 000, Grade 1 Durban Golden Horseshoe on Vodacom Durban July Day at Greyville on Saturday, heads the entries for the R200 000, Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes over 1 200m at Greyville on Mercury Sprint day on Saturday, July 18.

The race is one of four supporting events for the country’s premier weight-for-age sprint, the R750 000, Grade 1 Mercury Sprint, that was previously run at Clairwood and will now be run at Greyville for the first time.

The meeting will also see the running of “The Rider Cup”, the inter-provincial jockey challenge for South African riders over four races with four-man teams from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape competing for total prize money of R100 000.

Trained by Johan Janse van Vuuren, Brazuca ran a fantastic race under jockey Weichong Marwing and looked a winner until Anton Marcus got a last-stride thrust from Seventh Plain to snatch the result by a short head.

Also among the entries for the Umkhomazi Stakes is the Michael Roberts-trained Argonaut gelding Natal that went down by about a head to Cutting Edge in the R1-million KZN Yearling Sale Million that closed off the country’s biggest meeting.

Buckinghamshire, the Australian-bred colt from the Justin Snaith stable that inflicted the only defeat on Seventh Plain when they met over 1 000m in the Cape, is also among the entries.

The Debutante, the two-year-old race for fillies, has attracted 22 entries including the SA Nursery winner Frosted Honey and Speedy Suzy that finished fourth in the Allan Robertson Championship.

In the Off To Stud Stakes for four-year-old fillies and mares over 1 600m, the winner of the Track And Ball Handicap at Greyville on July Day, Resolution from the Charles Laird stable, is among the 25 entries along with the consistent Dennis Drier filly Gathering Fame and San Trip from the Mark Dixon yard that finished third in the Scarlet Lady.

The Queen Palm Stakes is for fillies and mares over 2 400m and has attracted 18 horses headed by Ash Cloud, Gallica Rose and Vino Veritas that filled the first three places in the Gold Circle Oaks at Scottsville recently. Also among the entries is the Neil Bruss-trained Ideal World filly Zante that ran a great race at 33-1 to finish fourth in the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000.

Legislate (Liesl King)

Decisions to be made for Legislate

Last year’s Vodacom Durban July hero Legislate will gallop this morning and how he goes will have a big bearing on whether he drops back to 1 200m for the Mercury Sprint at Greyville on Saturday July 18.

Justin Snaith said yesterday: “We are not desperate to run – we have the whole summer ahead of us – but if we think he is in a good place, that everything is spot on and that he would have a chance of running into the money then he will run.

“We are also waiting on the nominations for the Champions Cup with him. At this stage it looks like Futura will run in that race.”

The nominations for the Champions Cup (July 25) were due to close last Friday but will not now be known until 11.00am today.

Legislate returned to his best to make all the running in last month’s Rising Sun Gold Challenge after a virus caused him to disappoint in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and miss the J & B Met. He then had to be scratched from the Drill Hall after hurting himself in the pens.

ABOUT: The Mercury Sprint

THE ULTIMATE TEST OF SPEED

Racing at level weights is the only true assessment of thoroughbred supremacy and the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1 200m at Clairwood is the ultimate test for sprinters in South Africa and the result often determines the Equus Champion Sprinter of the season.

First run in 1976 as the Natal Flying Championships, it has been the Mercury Sprint since 1986 and is the longest running media-sponsored race in South Africa.

Attracting the best speed horses in the land, it has invariably produced close and exciting finishes and racegoers will never forget the sensational neck and neck duel between stable companions Springing Leopard and Splendid Ann in 1988 who raced clear of the field and fought it tooth and nail to the line with the filly just shading Springing Leopard in the final strides.

Outstanding performances have been recorded by the likes of Signor Amigo, Flobayou, Jet Master and the magnificent National Currency.

Fly By Night grabs Mercury Sprint

For the second year running, it was a filly that led the field home in the country’s premier weight-for-age Grade 1 sprint at Clairwood in Durban with the daughter of Jet Master, Fly By Night, putting in a devastating late run to win the R750 000 Mercury Sprint.

Last year it was the Vaughan Marshall-trained filly All Is Secret that took the honours as champion What A Winter, in his final race and expected to go out in a blaze of Glory, was beaten into third place.

Fittingly, it was Cape trainer Mike Bass, who had suffered the disappointment of What A Winter’s failure last year, who was to lead in his charge with assistant trainer Robert Fayd’Herbe after Saturday’s race for owners Markus Jooste, Bryn Ressell and Marsh Shirtliff who could not attend the final feature race meeting at the southern Durban course.

The four-year-old filly had drawn some support but was easy to back at 9-2 behind favourite Copper Parade at 33-10 and Here Comes Billy at 4-1 with the race looking fairly open. Normanz had been scratched after being injured in the saddling enclosure when he became fractious and leaped from his saddling stall into the adjacent stall.

Fly By Night, ridden by Anthony Delpech, looked a picture on the way to the start and in the early stages raced just off the pace set early by Casual Var and Barbosa. As they approached the business end of the race Fly By Night was looking for a gap on the outside fence and when it opened she barged through with a flashing finish to beat Copper Parade and Showmetheway with Midnight Run taking fourth spot.

It was almost a repeat performance of that which the filly delivered at Scottsville in The City Of Pietermaritzburg SA Fillies Sprint when she flashed up late to fail beating Via Africa by a head.

Delpech said after the race that at one stage, when looking for the gap, he had through of shouting to be let through but he knew that had he done that, “they would have shut me out.”

Run at Clairwood from its inception in 1986, it was the final Mercury Sprint to be run at Clairwood which has been sold and is to become part of the planned new deep-water harbour for Durban.

2013

It had been announced that champion sprinter What A Winter would make his racing swansong in this race and he was duly expected to make it a memorable winning one. He was obviously the short-priced favourite having won his last four starts, two at Grade 1 level, in spectacular fashion. He was seen as being invincible but the stable and large crowd were stunned when he was beaten into third place.

The 25-1 outsider All Is Secret from the Vaughan Marshall stable had set a cracking gallop from the start and the crowd waited for What A Winter to shift up a gear and run the filly down in the finish. He had raced up handy on the outside of the field but when it came to the business end of the race the champion just failed to fire and All Is Secret ran on strongly to win.

What A Winter then had to suffer further humiliation when the mare Welwitschia from the Mike de Kock stable flew up late to deny him even second place.

It was a sad end to a wonderful career and trainer Mike Bass was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance.

For trainer Marshall it was another great achievement in this top sprint event which he had won before. All Is Secret was given a rest after this race while What A Winter was retired to stud.

2012

It was on the cards that the Western Winter colt What A Winter had the ability to win Saturday’s R600 000, Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1 200m at Clairwood – the only question in the minds of punters was whether the real What A Winter would appear.

Seeing the four-year-old in the parade ring he looked every part the horse to beat, focused and fit and tuned to perfection by trainer Mike Bass. On the way to the start he moved smoothly and effortlessly and it was clear that at the weights, the rest of the field would be racing for second place.

And the colt did not disappoint.

In the hands of Bernard Fayd’Herbe, he leapt from stall 12 on the outside of the field and slipped neatly in behind the flighty filly Chocolicious and the Gauteng raider Midnight Serenade, just striding sweetly and patiently. The leading pair soon cried enough and Bernard gave What A Winter a bit of rein which saw him lengthen his stride as second favourite Delago Deluxe, winner of the Golden Horse Casino Sprint, got the nod from jockey Anton Marcus and moved up in the middle of the course.

What A Winter was striding beautifully up the outside of the course and when Bernard asked him the question it was all over bar the shouting. Delago Deluxe produced a spirited finish but the three-year-old made no impression on the top Cape sprinter who went on to win by nearly three lengths in a time just 0.70 secs outside the course record of 67.06 secs set by the superstar J J The Jet Plane four years ago.

2011

The Grade 1 Mercury Sprint consolidated its status as the country’s leading weight-for-age sprint with another thrilling finish where the result was in the balance right up to the dying stages of the race.

In a race that was seen as being wide open with the three-year-olds Magico and Splash Gold as the two disputing the top of the betting boards but not as strong favourites, the race proved that at weight-for-age anything can happen and in this case it was the four-year-old Var gelding August Rush that came to the fore under a superb ride by Bernard Fayd’Herbe to lift the winner’s cheque.

2010

J J The Jet Plane stamped himself as one of South Africa’s best ever sprinters at Clairwood yesterday when annihilating a Grade 1 field as if out on an exercise gallop.

The five-year-old Lucky Houdalakis-trained Jet Master gelding opened at very generous odds of 16-10, probably on the grounds that he had recently missed 10 days of work, and started at 9-10.

However, it was clear almost from the off that he was his usual self, assuming the lead immediately and with a tailwind behind him the only question was whether he would need a parachute to slow down.

He passed the post 5,5 lengths lengths clear of Gaultier and the time was just 0,17 seconds outside the course record. Strydom confirmed afterwards that he was the best sprinter he had ever ridden.

2009

Our Giant pulverized the field to win the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint by 4,25 lengths at Clairwood racecourse.

The Charles Laird trained Australian bred star had only once run a sprint shorter than 1400m before, and was full value for the win, especially after recovering from the 2 200m Vodacom Durban July just 15 days before.

The five year old gelding Giants Causeway started as tote favourite although the Mike de Kock trained Centaur and Mike Bass’ Gaultier topped the bookmakers boards at 4-1.

Our Giant, with Anton Marucs in the saddle, was content to sit behind the leading pack, until he was shown the inside at the 400m mark and responded with an impressive burst of speed before surging clear in the closing stages.

The Dennis Drier trained Sharks Bay also came off the pace to run well for second, ahead of Exctinct, with Wethreekings holding off Blue Tiger for fourth.

Our Giant was the first of many Australian bred horses’ trainer Charles laird chose for his biggest owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste, and has proved to be very good and versatile campaigner.

Cape trainers dominated the features at Scottsville yesterday and both of the two-year-old Gr 2 winners put their hands up as contenders for Champions Season that officially starts this Saturday.

The Justin Snaith-trained two-year-old colt Harry Lime was an easy winner of the Gr 2 Umkhomazi Stakes over 1 200m under Richard Fourie and is yet another progeny of Var that will make his presence felt. “This horse can really run,” said Snaith.

He added that the bay colt was still very immature, implying that no risks would be taken. He continued, “We bought him specifically for the Gr 1 at Scottsville (Tsogo Sun Medallion), so will see how well he pulls up and take it from there.”

The Fred Crabbia-owned colt started 2-1 favourite and pulled clear from a handy position to win by 3,75 lengths. The Mike de Kock-trained 14-1 shot Mastermind battled bravely, but made little impression on the winner. The Paul Lafferty-trained 8-1 chance Harry’s Son will likely prefer further, so did well to finish third. The Duncan Howells-trained Easy Lover started 13-2 joint second favourite and finished fourth, with Kapitan next best.

The Glen Kotzen-trained filly Rosier appeared to enjoy the Scottsville 1 200m trip of the Gr 2 Debutante as much as her father Kildonan did and ground out a determined victory under Stuart Randolph. She remained unbeaten, having won on debut at Kenilworth at odds of 50-1 and following up in the Listed East Cape Filllies Nursery over 1 200m at Fairview.

Yesterday she started at 16-1 and was in the firing line throughout before fighting on well to hold the Mike Azzie-trained Gauteng raider Lady Ky at bay by 0,75 lengths. The De Kock-trained Ad Idem finished third ahead of the 2-1 favourite, the Snaith-trained Arria. The Mike Bass-trained Seven Grand moved up threateningly from behind, but didn’t go through with it as well as she had in her previous starts and finished fifth.

Rosier has early pace and a strong finish, the combinations necessary for the Gr 1 Allan Robertson over this course and distance at the end of May.

The Highveld raider from the Joey Soma yard, Rodeo Sioux, had earned a cheque in her last fourteen starts, which were run over distances of 1 800-2 600m, and must be rated the most consistent female stayer in the country. She duly started favourite at 7-2.

Antonia’s Fortress set the pace with Rodeo Sioux on the rail in third and Roc ‘N Rose also on the rail two horses further back. Roc ‘N Rose threw her head up rounding the first turn for a stride or to, but fortunately the race was run at a consistent pace and she settled into her stride.

In the straight Rodeo Sioux hit the front and Rock ‘N Rose challenged and then went ahead. Rodeo Sioux fought back but Roc ‘N Rose showed a lot of courage to repel her and win by a head. The topweight Star Jet finished third followed by Enchanted Silk and Dame Victoria.

Roc ‘N Rose was bred by JA Taylor and is owned by BP Meth and the bold black type that she gained will have immediately increased her value.

Luna De Victoria won the next race, the Off To Stud Handicap over 1 600m, in the style of a good horse. This four-year-old Victory Moon filly is a half-sister to one of the most exciting two-year-olds in the country, the Joey Ramsden-trained Dynasty colt Act Of War, and now that she also has bold black type, she has become a valuable broodmare prospect.

She is a difficult customer at home and Crawford said that she required a lot of “TLC’’ in the mornings. However, the effort that the yard have put into her made yesterday’s victory all the more rewarding.

Luna De Victoria started 33-10 favourite as the classy topweight Orator’s Daughter drifted out to 7-2. Luna De Victoria wasn’t easy to restrain in a slow paced race, but eventually settled well towards the outside in about fifth place.

Hatt was content to be patient in the straight, knowing that she had a strong kick, and she duly produced it in the final 200m to go away and win impressively by 2,75 lengths from the consistent Hijacked.

The pacemaker Diva’s Daughter finished third ahead of the luckless Lady Tatty, who had to be checked at a crucial stage when looking threatening. Gold Academy was next best. Orator’s Daughter didn’t enjoy her first outing at Scottsville and trailed in last.

Hatt said afterwards that if Luna De Victoria was not as “highly strung’’ she would have won more races. However, it would be no surprise to see her going to stud now, considering her value. She was bred and is owned by AFJ Duncan.
