Captain Al rules

Top Cape-based trainer Vaughan Marshall admitted, after adding two more Gr 1’s to his glittering CV at Scottsville on Saturday, the Captain Als were always the first horses he viewed at the sales and he always viewed every one of them.

Marshall trained the great Klawervlei-based champion stallion and both of his yard’s big race winners on Saturday, The Secret Is Out and Always In Charge, are by Captain Al.

MJ Byleveld rode a race out of the top drawer in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship, remaining calm when short of room at the 500m mark, easing The Secret Is Out back slightly and then bursting through to win cosily.

Owner and breeder Garth Miller’s intuition when buying The Secret Is Out’s dam Secret Of Victoria a few years ago due to the speed in the pedigree has led to his BBP syndicate, consisting of himself and Basil Nelson, being in possession of one of the best families in the South African stud book.

Secret Of Victoria herself finished second in the Allan Robertson for Marshall. The Secret Is Out has now become her second daughter to win the prestigious two-year-old event.

Miller owned a half-share in The Secret Is Out’s full-sister All Is Secret, who won the Allan Robertson for Marshall in 2012.

The Secret Is Out did not go to the sales and on Saturday became Marshall’s fourth winner of the big race. Nelson was there to accept the trophy and Miller was sure to have been tuned in from his holiday venue.

The small filly has a “wonderful temperament”, “a big action and a big heart”. Furthermore, Marshall said, “We have not got to the bottom of her yet.”

Later, The Klawervlei Stud-bred and Markus and Ingrid Jooste-owned Always In Charge gave Marshall his second career win of the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion.

Jockey Anton Marcus said it had not taken him long to agree with stable jockey Byleveld’s assessment of this being a “special horse” after he had begun working him ten days before the race at Summerveld.

Marshall purchased him for R650,000 at the CTS Emperor’s Palace Select Yearling Sale and Jooste had later taken ownership.

Marshall, recalling the sale, said, “He wasn’t a big horse, he was very athletic and had a lot of quality about him.”

He won in fine style on Saturday, beating the field by three lengths in a time 0,37 seconds quicker than the fillies race.

A lot more will be heard of him and Marshall believes he will be even better when he goes around the turn.

De Beer’s star shines

Coenie de Beer has traipsed the country with his one good horse in search of a Grade 1 and it paid off handsomely at Scottsville yesterday. Talktothestars (11-2), racing ‘barefoot’, defying top weight and his pedigree landed the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m. The win was also the first Gr1 for De Beer.

Pierre Strydom, recently back from an extended injury break, rode the perfect race, tracking the pace before accelerating up the inside fence to win under hands and heels.

African Ruler tried hard up the centre but proved no match for the winner while Exelero was the first of the fancied runners home in third.

“What a lovely temperament this horse has, “said Strydom. “He tried to buck me off going to the start. First he didn’t want to canter, but he went into the stalls and stood quietly and he just travelled in the race.

“I felt really good going through the 400 but I always thought that something that was well handicapped might come and grab us with 60 on our back but he just kept on plugging away,” Strydom concluded.

Carry On Alice, looking for her fifth Gr1 victory, and back-to-back wins in the Gr1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint, proved an expensive failure as she could only manage fifth behind Real Princess (5-1) who was chased home by Fly By Night and rank outsider Joan Ranger.

This was the sixth and most important win for Real Princess who is unbeaten at Scottsville. “My filly just loves this track,” said winning rider Anthony Delpech. “She’s never been beaten here. This was a great win because she’s all heart and no legs.”

Delpech tracked the early pace and pulled out from behind the pack approaching the 300m mark. All this time S’manga Khumalo, who had tracked the early speed on Carry On Alice, found himself ‘snookered’ and his hunt for a gap was thwarted at every turn. Delpech gave Real Princess a clear run for the wire and she responded under a driving ride to hold of Fly By Night, second to Via Africa two years back, who had shown pace throughout on the outside.

Vaughan Marshall did the Gr1 two-year-old double as Always In Charge (19-10) lived up to his name and made most of the running to win the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Medallion following on The Secret Is Out’s victory in the G1 Allan Robertson Championship.

Always In Charge (Nkosi Hlophe)

Always In Charge (Nkosi Hlophe)

An outside gate down the Scottsville straight is widely regarded as a coffin draw but Anton Marcus, braving criticism, held station and cut the early pace. He had the field off the bit a long way out and although drifting towards the inside under pressure the result was never in doubt once the chips were down.

Corne Spies’s decision to skip the Allan Robertson in favour of the Medallion with Seattle Singer proved an inspired move as she put all but Always In Charge to bed, finishing a clear second ahead of Riverine and Red Rock.

Always In Charge is owned by Markus and Ingrid Jooste, in the UK for the Investec Derby, and was booted home by their retained rider.

“I must thank MJ Byleveld,” said Marcus. “When this horse arrived in Durban MJ came to me and said this horse is special. I have been working him for about 10 days now and his work was exceptional,” he added.

“This is one instance when I’m looking forward to a horse going around the turn because I think he will be even better,” commented Marshall, issuing a warning for to those with hopes in the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe on Vodacom Durban July day and the Gr1 Premier’s Champion Juvenile Stakes on eLan Gold Cup day.

If it wasn’t out before, it is now. The Secret Is Out (12-10, pictured) overcame some traffic and put a high class field to the sword in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship.

It was a fourth win in the race for Marshall who also trained full sister All Is Secret to win the race back in 2012. Super sire Captain Al was also trained by Marshall and did the double with Always In Charge winning the Medallion. Stable rider MJ Byleveld produced his filly with a sustained burst to comfortably hold off the attentions of a fast finishing Fursa with the Sean Tarry pair of Visuality and Myfunnyvalentine also running on strongly.

Byleveld was forced to ease out of a gap when Muzi Yeni aboard Blaze Of Mystery shut the door on him at the 500m mark but The Secret Is Out switched out smoothly and set sail for the line.

Blaze Of Mystery had the call inside the final furlong but The Secret Is Out gradually reeled her in as the leader came under pressure. The Secret Is Out took over 100m out as Blaze Of Mystery came up empty and it was left to SA Fillies Nursery winner and Dubai-bound Fursa, last coming through the junction of the courses, to chase home for second.

Marshall was lavish in his praise. “She has a wonderful temperament, nothing worries her and I don’t think we have got to the bottom of her yet.”

“She’s that good and she got herself out of trouble, just the sign of a very good horse. She’s very, very special.”

barbosa nh site

Barbosa fits the bill

Scottsville’s Festival Of Speed meeting is a day for both the purist and socialite as it always attracts a large and festive crowd, while it takes a top horse to win any of the four Gr 1 1200m events on the card.

Hopefully, with the moving of the far rail inward a few metres, horses will have equal chances no matter where they are drawn.

The Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint is as open as ever and every single horse has a winning chance. Class usually prevails in this race, although occasionally one slips through the handicapping net and punters have the luxury of both class and weight on their side.

The one who best fits both credentials is Barbosa, who has blossomed this season, and his Gr 1 Computaform Sprint third place was similar in style to his former stablemate Captain Of All’s third place in that race last year. The latter went on to win the Tsogo Sun and Barbosa can bring more success to trainer Dennis Drier, who will probably need another cabinet soon just to contain his Scottsville trophies.

Gulf Storm and Talktothestars are the two classiest horses in the field, so are selected for second and third respectively. Captain Alfredo is the young pretender, so could also finish in the quartet. Exelero looks well weighted on certain collateral formlines, so could also earn a cheque. However, it would not be foolish to include the whole field in the Pick 6.

Gulf Storm (Liesl King)

Gulf Storm (Liesl King)

Cuvee Brut, stablemate to Gulf Storm, represents the yard of Brett Crawford, whose SA Champions Season horses have proved in need of their first KZN runs this year. Crawford’s pair are both likely to show big improvement on their last runs. Captain’s Causeway is 1kg under sufferance, but his merit rating is likely capped. Both Captain Alfredo and Captain’s Causeway were given the maximum allowed raise for their respective first and second place in the Listed In Full Flight Stakes, but they probably both deserved to be given even more.

Ernie ran an honest third in the In Full Flight and is 3,5kg better off with Captain Alfredo for a 4,75 length beating, so will have his work cut out, although the officially “very soft” going that day could have exaggerated the winning margins. Ernie should now be at his peak and 1200m looks to be his best trip. Red Ray has the class, as proven by his second place from a tough draw in this race two years ago, but connections have admitted he will only be about 80% fit.

Seventh Plain is one of the dark horses, as one who oozes class, but is coming off an interrupted preparation. He was doing good late work in the In Full Flight Stakes and should have improved a lot from that run. Guiness also has a lot of class, having, like Seventh Plain, won the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion as a two-year-old, and he should also improve on his last run, which was his comeback from an overall disappointing campaign in Cape Town.

Splendid Garden did not have an ideal preparation into the Computaform Sprint, yet still ran a fine fifth, despite jumping from a tough draw. He is thriving at Summerveld and is a runner if behaving himself at the start. Tiger’s Touch will need to improve on the form she has shown off her current 104 merit rating. African Ruler is an up and coming sort who was raised one point after finishing second in the Gr 3 Man O’ War Sprint over 1100m at Turffontein and this is now a lot tougher.

Carry On Alice in the City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint will be the meeting banker provided she is herself, and trainer Sean Tarry has been concerned by the below par form of his Randjesfontein yard at present, so it is not a given she will be. Lanner Falcon has blossomed and can pick up the pieces.

Princess Royal has come on a lot from her last run and is ideally course and distance suited. Joan Ranger is the dark horse as one who has won both of her sprints in fine style since proving herself suited to shorter distances. Real Princess won the Poinsettia over course and distance in eye-catching fashion after being squeezed at the start. They are selected in the order mentioned.

Horse Guards could give Drier his sixth win of the Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion in the last seven renewals. He was an impressive course and distance winner last time out. However, Always In Charge looks top class too. Oomph brings the unknown as he has obliterated all before him in the weaker centre of Port Elizabeth. Paperback Writer is another dark horse as a well bred sort who has shown plenty of speed and is now dropped to a likely more suitable 1200m. Red Rock strikes as being better than the form of his last run suggests. He did have to switch close to home in that last run. Seattle Singer is interesting as a consistent and improving filly with  a gender allowance.

The Allan Robertson Championship, following the scratching of the brilliant Cloth Of Cloud, could be won by the classy and superbly bred The Secret Is Out, who has impressed to date. Visuality caught the eye last time in a race which didn’t pan out well for her and is the dark horse. Zaakhira beat a moderate field impressively on debut and should improve further. Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Fursa ideally needs further, but should relish the tough course and distance. SA Fillies Nursery runner up Myfunnyvalentine could earn too.

Secret revealed

Scottsville hosts the popular Festival Of Speed tomorrow with the running of four Gr1 sprints headed by the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint. It is a wide open handicap with any number of runners in with winning chances. Vaughan Marshall’s runner Exelero does not have the best of draws but he has a handy galloping weight and found his best form over the course and distance last time out.

Runner-up that day was Captain Alfredo who franked that form by winning next time out. He took an eight-point jump in the ratings which could hamper his chances come tomorrow but he and trainer Dean Kannemeyer are both in good form.

Red Ray makes a return and has only had one run overseas since finishing second to Normanz in this race two years back. He jumped from the worst of the draw that day and Joey Ramsden was adamant that with a better gate he could well have caught Normanz. Red Ray’s form must be taken on trust as little can be read into the riding arrangements. Anton Marcus will have battled to make the weight on either of Seventh Plain, now with blinkers, or Guiness.

Top weight Talktothestars appears better over shorter but is tremendously game while Captain’s Causeway was chasing hard behind Captain Alfredo and with his light weight will be a threat.  African Ruler faces his toughest test but with a light weight and a good draw is another to consider in a difficult race.

The-Secret-Is-Out

The Secret Is Out (Nkosi Hlophe)

The shock withdrawal of Gr1 SA Nursery winner Cloth Of Cloud because of a respiratory infection has left the way clear for a Vaughan Marshall feature double as he saddles the progressive The Secret Is Out.

The Secret Is Out is a full sister to 2012 Allan Robertson winner All Is Secret also trained by Marshall and both were by supreme stallion and Marshall-trained Captain Al. The Secret Is Out has had the benefit of a win over the course and she did it in style which makes her a big runner.

Zaakhira was a facile winner on debut in good time so could be anything while stable companion Fursa won the SA Fillies Nursery and has won over further so will not be troubled by this trip.

Blaze Of Mystery is unbeaten over course and distance and won comfortably last start so also has a shout.

Marcus will have had the pick of the Jooste runners in the Gr1 Gold Medallion so Always In Charge looks the ‘right’ one after his easy maiden win. However, Act Of Loyalty won well under Weichong Marwing and the winning distance is deceiving as he won much more easily than the narrow margin would suggest.

The unbeaten PE sensation Oomph has his first run for Mike Azzie and will be tested in this field. PE horses have done well at this venue so Oomph must be included in all calculations but he will be put to the acid test tomorrow.

Horse Guards comes from a stable that has won four of the last five runnings with Dennis Drier looking for his sixth Medallion win with Horse Guards. The son of Horse Chestnut has won both of his starts in good fashion and given the stable record in the race must have a great chance. Riverine and the filly Seattle Singer are others to consider.

Carry On Alice looks the banker on the card as she defends her title in the Gr1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint, a race she won last year and she is still in scintillating form. She will be hard to beat. There should be very little between Lanner Falcon and Real Princess given their last run but the former was having her first outing since January and should strip fitter which could see her turn the tables. Princess Royal is always on the verge of a boil-over but she gets on well with Anthony Andrews and she too should have come on from her effort behind Real Princess and Lanner Falcon.

over sure

Over Sure has a shout

Summerveld trainer Kumaran Naidoo gives his charge Over Sure “a shout” in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion tomorrow and this Mogok colt certainly has plenty of scope for improvement.

Over Sure showed pace on the Greyville turf over 1200m second time out, having previously beaten a weak field on debut over 1200m on the poly. He appeared to have that second start won, after having taken up the running from a wide draw. However, on a bright day, he hesitated when seeing the grandstand shadow ahead and was overtaken late by two decent types in Caddy Master and Good To Give. Trainer Michael Roberts has described Caddy Master, who beat Over Sure by one length, as “special”, and Over Sure was giving him 5kg if apprentice allowances are included.

Over Sure then ran in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville in “very soft” going and once again showed good pace. However, jumping from a high draw he was on the outside of runners and was looking at the stands the whole way. He was also tending to hang inward. He still managed to finish second and the 6,25 length margin of defeat is the closest any horse to date has got to the seemingly freakish Red Chesnut Road.

The latter’s scratching from the Gold Medallion has thrown the race wide open.

Naidoo took Over Sure to Scottsville for a preparatory gallop the other day with a new bit fitted. He said, “He didn’t hang at all, it was a very good gallop, and we are very happy with him.”

He jumps from draw four and could provide yet another milestone for the unstoppable apprentice Lyle Hewitson.

Tarry troops cleared

Sean Tarry, having expressed concern during the week about a bacterial infection he believed had been going around his Randjesfontein yard, confirmed all of his remaining Gr 1 runners for Scottsville’s big Festival Of Speed meeting this weekend had appeared to be fine. They had duly travelled well down to Summerveld where they had eaten up well and their temperatures were normal.

Tarry said some of the yard’s recent Highveld-based runners had been found to have had mucus upon returning from below par runs.

However, tests done at Randjesfontein on the Scottsville Gr 1 contestants revealed only the crack filly Cloth Of Cloud to have been affected by the suspected bacterial infection. She has duly been scatched with the reason given being “respiratory infection.”

All six of the remaining Gr 1 contestants were on the float which travelled down to Summerveld on Thursday.

Tarry has the meeting banker in Carry On Alice and was obviously hoping she would be at her best. He elaborated: “Her and all of the others were clear, they seemed fine, so hopefully all is well.”

Tarry has two runners in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, Captain’s Causeway and Tiger’s Touch, and while feeling they were both up to it, he revealed they were actually his second and third choices respectively, because his first choice, Buckland, had been eliminated.

He said, “I don’t think the very soft going suited Captain’s Causeway last time.” The three-year-old was a 1,75 length runner up to Captain Alfredo in the Listed In Full Flight Stakes over 1100m. He continued, “He will be better over 1200m and will enjoy the firmer going.”

He added, “Tiger’s Touch’s last run was a bit close to her run in the mile and was a bit of a flat run.” She finished a 3,75 length fifth in the Gr 2 Camelia Stakes for fillies and mares over 1160m at Turffontein, two weeks after finishing a two length fourth to Inara in the Gr 1 Laurie Jaffee Empress Club Stakes over 1600m.

Tarry believes Tiger’s Touch is worthy of her 104 merit rating.

Tarry has two runners in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship, Visuality and Myfunnyvalentine.

He said, “Visuality’s last run was a great run, the going was very soft, she was slow away and green, and the draw on that day might not have been in her favour. There is scope for improvement. There shouldn’t be much between her and Myfunnyvalentine, but I am leaning towards Visuality, because she was still learning in those first two runs.”

Visuality finished fourth in the Gr 3 Strelitzia Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville last time out and has two lengths to find on The Secret Is Out. Myfunnyvalentine was runner up in the Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein second time out and has 1,2 lengths to find on Fursa.

Tarry believes Red Rock, who is his sole runner in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion, is better than his last run. He said, “He beat a horse on debut who came out and won his next race.”

The horse he refers to is British Royale, who beat Gold Medallion contender Sporting Monarch in a Juvenile Plate over 1000m second time out, albeit when receiving 5kg, and the third horse in that race was beaten 12,1 lengths.

He continued, “Red Rock took a few bumps in his second start and will prefer the 1200m.”

In that last start Red Rock was beaten 9,75 lengths in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville in “very soft going”, a race in which the highly promising Red Chesnut Road was 6,25 lengths clear of second-placed Over Sure.

Red Rock will thus have to make up 3,5 lengths on Over Sure in the Gold Medallion, although he was being eased at the line and could have got a bit closer.

Tarry concluded, “Tiger’s Touch’s and Red Rock’s final gallops (at Randjesfontein) were exceptional.”

Cloud over Tarry yard

National Champion trainer Sean Tarry is concerned ahead of Saturday’s Scottsville Festival Of Speed racemeeting about a bacterial infection he believes is going through his Randjesfontein yard.

Tarry holds a strong hand but said; “The yard has been misfiring. We are doing checks and balances and a final call will be made after tests are done on the runners before they travel down to KZN.”

Tarry has already scratched Cloth Of Cloud, ante-post favourite for the Gr1 Allan Robertson, with a respiratory infection.

Tarry felt an article about the well-being of his runners at this stage would not be accurate.

Latest information about his runners will be published on the www.goldcircle.co.za website and the SA Racing App, as well as a snippet in the Independent On Saturday.

Tarry has at least one of the perceived meeting bankers in Carry On Alice. Other runners with chances include Visuality, Myfunnyvalentine, Red Rock, Tiger’s Touch and Captain’s Causeway.

Barbosa (Nkosi Hlophe)

Drier to defend crown

Maestro Summerveld trainer Dennis Drier has an enviable record in the Scottsville Festival Of Speed meeting Gr 1 events and, apart from winning five of the last six renewals of the Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion, his yard will also be defending the Tsogo Sun Sprint crown.

Barbosa (Nkosi Hlophe)

Barbosa (Nkosi Hlophe)

Drier, like all great trainers, pays acute attention to detail and expects high standards from his staff and stable jockeys, so his Gr 1 contestants will invariably be tuned to the minute.

He said he did not have a preference between Barbosa and Guiness in the Tsogo Sun Sprint and added both had been “doing well.” Seventh Plain, on the other hand, had suffered a setback which had forced his comeback from a layoff to be put back a couple of weeks.

On May 22 he ran below his best in a Pinnacle event over 1000m at Scottsville, finishing 4,05 lengths back, but he was doing some eye-catching late work under a sympathetic ride. He should do a lot better on Saturday and, as a brilliant winner over course and distance in last year’s Gold Medallion, can’t be discounted despite the less than ideal preparation.

Assistant trainer Stuart Ferrie believes Barbosa is “better than he has ever been”. This six-year-old Captain Al gelding has certainly blossomed and, having remained on a merit rating of 108 after his excellent third in the Gr 1 weight for age Computaform Sprint, he must be a big runner. Former Gold Medallion winner Guiness has to be a runner too having scraped into the handicap with bottom weight of 52kg.

Stable jockey Sean Veale is aboard Barbosa from draw 10, while Seventh Plain has Aldo Domeyer aboard from draw 15 and Guiness is drawn 17 with Callan Murray up.

Seventh Plain (Nkosi Hlophe)

Seventh Plain (Nkosi Hlophe)

Drier said about unbeaten Gold Medallion hopeful Horse Guards, “He is doing nicely and this will be a nice test for him.”

Drier said it was hard to compare this Horse Chestnut colt to the yard’s previous Gold Medallion winners.

Punters and pundits always look out for Drier’s Gold Medallion candidates in the early part of the year and a valid contender seemed a long time in coming this time around. However, Horse Guards’ debut, a five length romp on the Greyville poly over 1000m on April 29, was actually not as close up to the Gold Medallion as Captain Of All’s debut in 2013.

Horse Guards ran over the Gold Medallion course and distance on May 22 in his second start and, after showing plenty of pace, pulled away to win impressively by 2,25 lengths.

This year’s Gold Medallion renewal has been made weaker by the scratching of the impressive Red Chesnut Road, but there are still some exciting prospects involved, such as Oomph, Always In Charge and Rivarine. However, few would bet against Drier making it six out of seven and seven in total, having also won it way back in 1990 with Spook And Diesel.

Red Ray (Liesl King)

Marcus in charge

Anton Marcus, as possibly the country’s most sought after jockey, surprisingly has only two rides in the jackpot of Gr 1s at Scottsville on Saturday.

One of them is aboard the always vaunted Joey Ramsden-trained five-year-old entire Red Ray, who makes his comeback from a 16-month layoff in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, a race he finished second in two years ago.

Marcus looks to have a top ride in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion aboard the Vaughan Marshall-trained colt Always In Charge.

Red Ray (Liesl King)

Red Ray (Liesl King)

Red Ray made the long sojourn via Mauritius and England to Dubai after his runner up finish at Scottsville in 2014 but only ended up having one run overseas, finishing a 6,25 length seventh in the Gr 2 Al Fahidi Fort over 1400m on the turf, despite starting 2/1 favourite.

Marcus said about Red Ray’s well-being at Summerveld, “He is doing fairly well and I am looking forward to riding him.”

Markus Jooste’s racing manager Derek Brugman elaborated and said due to previous soundness issues they had not pushed Red Ray to the limit in training, so could only have him about 80% fit. He added, “We would have preferred to have a run under the belt.” However, he said the Western Winter entire was as fit as they could have him under the circumstances, as well as sound, and connections were hoping for a good run. He runs off the identical merit rating of 108 he had in the race as a three-year-old and carries 56kg from a middle draw of eight.

The Captain Al colt Always In Charge, who like Red Ray is owned by Markus and Ingrid Jooste, lived up to his name in his second start over 1200m at Kenilworth on April 23. He was cruising at the head of affairs until the business end where he pulled away impressively to win by 3,25 lengths under MJ Byleveld. Anthony Delpech, who rides the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Paperback Writer in Saturday’s race, confirmed he had been impressed by Always In Charge, having been on the runner up that day, Cock-A-Hoop.  Kannemeyer only mentioned Always In Charge when talking about the horses to beat in the Gold Medallion.

Marcus confirmed, “He is a nice horse.”

Marshall has a fine record in Scottsville’s two-year-old Gr 1s and last won the Gold Medallion in 2009 with Var colt Villandry.

Marcus has a prolific recent record in the Gold Medallion, winning it with Seventh Rock in 2007, Warm White Night in 2008, Delago Deluxe in 2011, Guiness in 2014 and Seventh Plain last year. All of them were owned by Jooste.

Mike Azzie (Nkosi Hlophe)

Azzie’s got Oomph

High-flying trainer Mike Azzie has a strong hand in all four of the Gr 1 1200m races at Scottsville on Saturday.

The most interesting of them is Oomph, who was bought out of a Port Elizabeth yard by Azzie’s chief clients Adriaan and Rika Van Vuuren and runs in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion from draw eight.

Mike Azzie (Nkosi Hlophe)

Mike Azzie (Nkosi Hlophe)

This former Alan Greef-trained Tiger Ridge colt has obliterated all before him in three sprint events at Fairview, including when giving weight away to all bar one runner in the Listed Epol Dahlia Plate over 1200m last time out and winning easing up by 6,25 lengths.

Oomph has been at Summerveld for a week. Azzie has only given him two half pace workouts to date and he will have a sprint up tomorrow (Thursday). He said, “He is a very good looking horse. I have kept Aldo (Domeyer) on, because he knows him well.”

However, Azzie also makes the stable companion, Var colt Rivarine, a “massive runner”. He pointed out he had finished just 0,9 lengths behind the much vaunted and unbeaten filly Cloth Of Cloud in the Gr 1 SA Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein last time out, despite initially tacking over towards the standside from a low draw and then tacking back in again in the closing stages.

He said, “He has been moving well.”

He is drawn seven and Karl Zechner retains the ride.

Azzie runs the temperamental Splendid Garden in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint and he must have a shout carrying a nice galloping weight of 54kg under JP van der Merwe. He is drawn high in 13, but horses have been winning from all draws at Scottsville lately, especially when the inside rail has been moved outward, as it will be on Saturday.

Aldo Domeyer (Nkosi Hlophe)

Aldo Domeyer (Nkosi Hlophe)

Azzie revealed the four-year-old Black Minnaloushe gelding had been coming off a virus before his below par penultimate start. His staying on 6,25 length fifth in the Computaform Sprint last time out had thus been a “cracker”, especially considering he had jumped from an unfavourable low draw.

Azzie said, “He is doing very well, his coat is glowing and if he behaves in the pens he will run a big race.”

Azzie has top sprinting filly Lazer Star in the Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint, but revealed the Van Vuurens had bought her out of the Ormond Ferraris yard chiefly for breeding purposes and this might well be her last run.

He said Ferraris had done an amazing job with her considering her feet problems. Azzie and his team have worked on the few niggles she still has and he hoped she would run well for them. The jockey who knows her best, Weichong Marwing, is aboard the Toreador speedster from draw nine in a race where every horse seems to be running for second behind Carry On Alice.

Azzie admitted Trippi filly Announcing Rain had a tough task in the Allan Robertson Championship, but reckoned she was better than her last run when sent clear over 1400m and, not surprisingly, fading. She has been doing well at Summerveld and the yard are taking their chances and hoping she earns black type.
