Generalissimo to take charge

The Scottsville Festival Of Speed meeting will be as exciting and intriguing as usual and picking winners in the Jackpot of Gr 1 races will have kept form studiers busy during the build up.

The R1 million Tsogo Sun Sprint is the headliner and as it is a handicap it is always the toughest of the four races to assess.

Generalissimo will attempt to make it three years in succession that a three-year-old son of Var has won this race. This Kenilworth 1200m course record holder looks to be more classy than the previous two winners Contador and Normanz and is only a couple of points higher in the merit ratings than they were. He has a fair draw of nine.

His stablemate Captain Of All possesses class in abundance and could join greats like J J The Jet Plane as a victor in this race with top weight. He loves this track and his draw of nine on a straight which usually favours low draws shouldn’t be a significant disadvantage considering he posseses both pace as well as the ability to kick late.

Willow Magic is a Gr 1 winner carrying only 54 kg and is drawn on the right side. He is 6kg better off with Captain Of All for a one length beating in the Gold Medallion two years ago and also 6kg better off with the same horse for a 2,65 length beating in last month’s Computaform Sprint. However, he didn’t get a good start in the latter race and will prefer the 1200m.

Sheik’s Brashee was unlucky last time out in the Listed In Full Flight Handicap over 1100m at Scottsville, but consequently avoided a merit rating raise and is drawn perfectly over a course and distance he loves.

Gulf Storm proved he enjoyed this tough course when impressing in the Listed In Full Flight Stakes over 1100m, but he was given a harsh nine point raise.

Barbosa won well over course and distance after a long layoff and is a game sort running from a good draw with a good jockey aboard. Brutal Force has quite a tough draw of 12 but won well last time over 1000m in his second run after gelding and will prefer this 1200m trip.

Zambezi River is a good looking horse who is suited to this trip and although officially 1kg under sufferance the best has probably not been seen of him. Bichette won by an impressive six lengths in a Gr 2 last time, showing speed throughout, but has a tough task at the weights for a three-year-old filly.

Normanz has enjoyed a good preparation and his pace could help him overcome a wide draw. He is only three points higher in the merit ratings than last year. Kingvoldt is full of class and effective over this trip but has the toughest draw to overcome.

Ashton Park was very unlucky in the Diadem over this trip and will likely be running on strongly after possibly being dropped out from a high draw. The speedy Flyfirstclass has won three times over course and distance and jumps from the same draw that the last two winners of this race have come from.

Moofeed was given a harsh eight points or his head second in the In Full Flight Stakes, when proving he is capable of overcoming this same high draw. Chekilli has early pace but couldn’t have landed a worse draw for his style of running. Daring Dave did not enjoy his first visit to Scottsville and has it all to do.

The Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship will be a cracker. Australian-breds have had a fine record in South Africa this season and although by jockey bookings Entisaar looks the second string from the De Kock yard, she impressed from an unfavourable draw when winning the Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery and should enjoy the tough Scottsville track from a fair draw of eight.

Classy Princess Royal is a half-sister to a previous winner of this race Princess Victoria and was unlucky last time out. She has come on from that run and doesn’t have too bad a draw in nine.

Unbeaten Royal Pleasure has landed a perfect low draw for her style of racing in which she likes to dominate from the off and on pedigree she should run all the way to the line.

Shaama is another Australian-bred from the De Kock yard and finished a gallant second against the boys in the SA Nursery but faces a tougher draw here. Swift Sarah impressed on debut and could be anything but also has a tricky draw.

The Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion could be won for the fifth time in six years by Dennis Drier. He runs Seventh Rock colt Seventh Plain, who has both early pace and the class to stay all the way to the line. Muwaary won easily on debut in a good time and is a classy Australian-bred who will have a big say. Redcarpet Captain has enjoyed a much better preparation than for the SA Nursery and could bounce back. Mr Roy has also enjoyed a better preparation this time than last and could be the dark horse.

Beat The Retreat was only 1,5 lengths off Seventh Plain last time and comes from a yard that has a good record in KZN Gr 1 sprints.

Prospect Strike beat a weak field by over 12 lengths on debut and could be anything. Donny G should improve on his debut win and is well drawn. Jet Air has some pace and will stay all the way to the line from a good draw. Just Africa has fair Jo’burg form and can’t be ignored.

The Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint could see Carry On Alice getting the better of her nemesis Alboran Sea from a superior draw and over a trip she will prefer. The latter will use her early pace to overcome her tricky draw and it is likely going to be a thriller.

Jet Belle is full of class and proved last time that she relishes this tough course, so could feasibly upset the applecart. Garibondy could be next best ahead of last year’s respective second and third Fly By Night and Jet Aglow.

The horses are selected for every race in the order mentioned.

De Kock troops ready to fire

Mike de Kock’s leading troops for the Festival Of Speed meeting at Scottsville on Saturday have all eaten up well and are in fine fettle after traveling from Johannesburg to Summerveld on Wednesday.

His Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint contender Moofeed was prepared out of Summerveld and the rest, Alboran Sea, Muwaary, Entisaar and Shaama, were all prepared out of Randjesfontein.

De Kock’s Summerveld assistant Nathan Kotzen said about Moofeed, who was punished five points for a narrow second in the Listed In Full Flight Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville last time out, “He has had two recent gallops in company and did well, but it’s a strong field.”

Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint contender Alboran Sea is on her way to being named Equus Champion Sprinter, having won both the Gr 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championships and Gr 1 Computaform Sprint, both over 1000m. She is just as effective over 1200m as she won the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship at Scottsville as a two-year-old last year. She recorded a blistering time despite the slightly soft going in the Computaform Sprint and can use her early pace to overcome her tricky draw of nine under Anthony Delpech.

The Australian-bred Muwaary was not very well away on debut but still sauntered to a hand and heels nine length victory in an excellent time over 1200m at The Vaal. The only downside is that the form has not been franked. He has a plum draw of five in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion and Delpech rides.

Australian-bred Entisaar didn’t beat a vintage field when winning the Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein, but the impressive point was that she jumped from an unfavourable draw and went through the worst going yet still won emphatically in the slightly soft going. She hasn’t raced on fast ground before, but her only defeat was in very soft going so she will probably appreciate a firmer surface. She jumps from a draw of eight, but interestingly Johnny Geroudis replaces chief stable jockey Anthony Delpech, who will be aboard Shaama.

Shaama is also an Australian-bred and showed good cruising speed from a favourable draw in the Gr 1 SA Nursery over 1160m, before fighting on doggedly to go down by a length. Her time was just over a second quicker than Entisaar’s, although she did carry 2,5kg less. She jumps from a tricky draw of 12.

Sean Tarry

Tarry troops primed

National champion trainer elect Sean Tarry said yesterday that he was happy with all of his charges for Saturday’s big Festival Of Speed meeting and they were shortly due to travel down to KZN.

His Gr 1 Allan Robertson contender Swift Sarah started at even money on debut and, although she didn’t beat much, the race was against older fillies and the manner of her six length victory suggests she has a bright future. The Dynasty filly showed good gate speed as well as cruising speed and produced a telling kick at the business end to draw away and win easing up. She jumps from draw 11 and Raymond Danielson keeps the ride.

Gold Medallion contender Donny G, a colt by the previous winner of this race Seventh Rock, showed excellent gate speed on debut over 1200m at the Vaal and then stayed on well to beat a weak field comfortably after being prominent throughout. His time was slightly slower on the same day than the Gr 1 Allan Robertson contender Pacifica and more than a second slower than the Gold Medallion contender Muwaary. However, he does look to have plenty of scope and on Saturday he jumps from a plum draw of two. Danielson has replaced Piere Strydom, who has now been left without a ride by the scratching of the Gavin van Zyl-trained Isca.

Tarry will have an excellent chance of Gr 1 glory in the Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint over 1200m with his top class Captain Al filly Carry On Alice. She faces her nemesis Alboran Sea, who beat her in the Allan Robertson last year as well as in the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championships over 1000 and the Gr 1 Computafor Sprint this year. However, she is drawn three compared to Alboran Sea’s nine so this should play in her favour, especially as she has excellent gate speed and early pace. Regular pilot S’Manga Khumalo is aboard.

His former Gr 1 SA Nursery and Gr 2 Dingaans winner Willow Magic will also have an outstanding chance of success in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sprint over 1200m. He was a runner up as a two-year-old in the Gold Medallion, beaten a length by Captain Of All. He was beaten 2,65 lengths by Captain Of All last time out in the Gr 1 Computaform Sprint over 1000m at Turffontein, but will now be receiving 6kg from the latter. He has a good draw of four with Piere Strydom up, although considering that the field tends to track over to that side these days he will need to jump quicker than he did in his last two starts. He has jumped well on occasion, but does prefer to be loaded late.

Tarry’s two other Gr 1 Tsogo Sun contenders, Zambezi River and Bichette, will also have plenty of supporters. Zambezi River, a good looking colt by Trippi, has a touch of class and his best form has been from 1000m to 1400m. The tough Scottsville track should be ideal and the draw of ten is not too bad. He is officially 1kg under sufferance but has only had seven career outings to date and has given the impression that the best has not yet been seen of him. Tarry has wisely avoided the City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint with Bichette, as Carry On Alice and Alboran Sea look difficult to oppose. This three-year-old Western Winter filly was, by the trends on the day, drawn on the wrong side last time out in the Gr 2 Camellia Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein, but that didn’t stop her winning by six lengths. She only carried 54,5kg on that occasion but was given a massive 16 point raise and now has to lug the same weight in Gr 1 company, despite being the only filly in the field. As a horse with a lot of pace, her draw of three is ideal, and she should be right up there. She has won over 1400m before so should stay all the way to the line, although her high merit rating of 108 makes it tough for her in this handicap event against the boys.

Beat The Retreat (Nkosi Hlophe)

Gordon pleased with Beat The Retreat

Alistair Gordon runs the two-year-old colt Beat The Retreat in the Gold Medallion at Scottsville on Saturday.

Beat The Retreat is by the disappointing sire Argonaut but Gordon pointed out that he was a sound horse and came from “a serious family,” which includes the like of Gr 1 winners Rabiya and All Is Secret. Gordon said, “He is doing very well and his prep has been good. He had a good gallop on Saturday on the grass and it went very well, I’m very happy.”

Beat The Retreat won by 3,5 lengths on debut over 1000m and finished just 1,5 lengths behind Seventh Plain in the Godolphin Barb at level weights in his second career outing. Gordon is not concerned by his very outside draw as it is only a small field of nine and he will likely get a clear run as opposed to being boxed in on the inside by horses moving over to seek the better going.

Mr Roy (Nkosi Hlophe)

Mr Roy looks promising

Alyson Wright runs the promising Western Winter colt Mr Roy in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion over 1200m and he looks to have a tough task on paper as he will have to make up 3,5 lengths on the classy colt Seventh Plain from their meeting in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes over 1100m, which was also run at Scottsville.

However, Wright said the always well regarded colt had not had a good preparation into the latter race due to a skin allergy and had consequently run “a flat race.” He was backed on debut and after disappointing was found to be full of mucous. He then came out and won well over 1000m a couple of month later on April 15. The yard are now confident that he will do better than he did third time out in the Godolphin Barb. He put in some very good work yesterday (Tuesday) and Wright said, “I am very pleased with him. He will be at his best and I think he will run a big race.”

He jumps from draw 6 in the nine horse field and Johnny Geroudis rides. Wright felt that the yard’s Vodacom Durban July entry Kochka had put in “an amazing run” on Sunday at Greyville, where he was beaten just 1,75 lengths by July favourite Futura over 1600m at level weights. The big Black Minnaloushe gelding was off with a virus for a while and only started normal work again two weeks ago, which emphasises just how fine an effort he put in on Sunday. He will be a big runner when stripping fitter next month in either the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m or the Gr 3 Cup Trial over 1800m.

Captain can bounce back to best

The Gavin van Zyl-trained pair of Redcarpet Captain and Isca worked together on the Summerveld beach sand track yesterday morning ahead of Saturday’s Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville and the former had the beating of the latter throughout. Jockey Warren Kennedy, who was aboard Isca, returned to confirm that his mount was being held by Redcarpet Captain throughout the 800m workout. Isca has subsequently been scratched.

Redcarpet Captain ran below par last time out in the Gr 1 SA Nursery over 1160m and Van Zyl explained that he had been incubating a low grade infection two weeks before the race. He was fine on the week of the race but the work he had missed took its toll and the form of his fourth place finish in the Nursery was some nine lengths inferior on paper to his win in the Gr 3 Protea Stakes over 1100m if a line through Nursery winner Arabian Beat is taken literally.

Van Zyl said the athletic bay Captain Al colt had done well since arriving at Summerveld about three weeks ago and the yard are hoping to see him back to his best. He has landed a plum draw of one and will be a big runner in a small but classy field of ten.

Prospect on Gold mission

One of the most interestingly bred horses at Saturday’s Scottsville Festival Of Speed meeting will be the Dominic Zaki-trained Prospect Strike, who displayed his class on debut when waltzing in by 12,75 lengths over 1200m on the Vaal turf. He recorded a fast time that day and could be a big threat in Saturday’s Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville.

Zaki said, “His preparation has gone smoothly and he is as fit as a fiddle. I am very happy with him, he is top class.”

The bay gelding was bred by the Tawny Syndicate and is owned by two of this syndicate’s members, Larry Nestadt and Greg Blank, in partnership with Knut Haug.

Nestadt and Blank found his Mr Prospector dam, Prospect Fever, in Australia and brought her back to South Africa. Their reasoning was not only that Mr Prospector mares were hard to come by but that she would also likely be an excellent mating for their Danehill stallion Toreador. This was partly due to the famous Northern Dancer-Mr Prospector nick. Toreador is from the Northern Dancer sire line and Prospect Fever herself has the Mr Prospector-Northern Dancer cross close up in her pedigree.

Furthermore, Prospect Fever had already produced the Gr 3-winning Danehill colt Way West, who became known as a speed influential sire at Summerhill Stud. Way West won an Australian Gr 3 over 1100m as a two-year-old in 2004, beating the now sort after sire Oratorio, so it is not surprising that his three parts brother Prospect Strike is also packed with precocious speed. Prospect Strike is in fact the third Toreador foal that Prospect Fever has produced and this emphasises the vagaries of breeding as the other pair, Abstract and Portrait, have not amounted to much, having won just three minor races between them, all over 1200m.

Toreador’s only Gr 1 winner to date was the Dennis Drier-trained Gold Medallion winner Link Man. This speedy grey was also bred by the Tawny Syndicate and part-owned by Nestadt and Blank.

Nestadt has also part-owned two other Medallion winners. The first was the National Emblem colt Rip Curl, whom he owned in partnership with the late chairman of Turffontein, Collie Fram, as well as with MD Moritz. Scottsville’s reputation as a graveyard of champions was displayed that day as the Nestadt-owned Palace Line started odds on favourite and could only manage fourth place, his only defeat in seven outings in South Africa. Palace Line later exacted revenge on Rip Curl in the Gr 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes. Nestadt’s other Medallion winner was also by National Emblem, the Mike de Kock-trained 2005 victor Carnadore, whom he owned in partnership with Barry Irwin’s Team Valor syndicate.

Prospect Strike has an unfavourable high draw, by trends, but there is only a small field of ten runners so it shouldn’t be too much of a disadvantage. Craig Zackey keeps the ride.

Nestadt and Blank will be hoping Prospect Strike earns them another Gold Medallion victory, especially as this would help Toreador find his way back into the limelight.

Generalissimo (Liesl King)

Drier happy with his troops

Masterful Summerveld trainer Dennis Drier has a fine chance of adding to his phenomenal record at Scottsville’s Festival Of Speed meeting this Saturday as he sends out five contestants in Gr 1 1200m events and most of them will be in with definite chances.

Drier has won four of the last five runnings of the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion, including the last three in succession, and he also won the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint, now known as the City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint, in 2011.

Drier has a fine chance of landing his fifth Medallion in six years with the ultra-classy Seventh Rock colt Seventh Plain and this rangy bay has landed a plum low draw.

Anton Marcus rode him in his final grass gallop last Tuesday and Drier was happy with what he saw. He added, “Anton didn’t say much so I hope he was happy, if he was happy I’m happy.”

Seventh Plain overcame a high draw of eight in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb over 1100m at Scottsville on April 26 and won effortlessly. He will appreciate the extra 100m on Saturday and further. His only defeat in three starts was when giving the speedy sprinting type Buckinghampshire 3kg in the Listed 1000m race on J&B Met day and only losing by 1,25 lengths.

Drier’s former Medallion winner Captain Of All has the ability to join the like of J J The Jet Plane and Earl Of Surrey as horses that have carried topweight to victory in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m. He was very impressive indeed in his penultimate start over 1000m at Scottsville, so clearly enjoys this track, and in his last start in the Gr 1 Computaform Sprint over 1000m at Turffontein he was by no means disgraced when third, four lengths behind Alboran Sea and Carry On Alice. The latter pair of fillies put in fantastic performances that day and Captain Of All was well clear of four other Gr 1 winners in the field.

Captain Of All worked on his own in his final grass gallop under Sean Cormack at Summerveld on Friday and Drier was very happy. He said, “When they are fit they don’t need to work with other horses, the art is not to overcook them.”

Drier “couldn’t be happier” with Generalissimo, who had his final grass gallop at Summerveld last Tuesday under Keagan de Melo. De Melo was unable to commit to the ride and Warren Kennedy might be aboard. This classy sort will attempt to make it three years in succession that the Tsogo Sun Sprint has been won by three-year-old sons of the amazing stallion Var. Generalissimo broke the Kenilworth course record over 1200m last November before failing to stay the 1600m of the Selangor Cup. He then finished lame after taking a slight sideways knock over 1200m. Drier, with the support of owners Nick and Ben Jonsson, excercised caution by not running him again in Cape Town, and it paid dividends as he bounced back with an impressive win over 1200m on the Greyville poly last month.

Barbosa is another from the yard that could get into the final field after an excellent 2,25 length defeat of the useful Muscatt over the Tsogo Sun course and distance in April, despite giving the latter 5kg. He broke the class record that day despite carrying 60kg. The five-year-old Captain Al gelding was raised to a 104 merit rating and Drier said, “The way he won they can’t leave him out, especially as Muscatt won next time out in a canter. He has had a few niggles and problems but has been a real old soldier.”

Drier’s two-year-old Horse Chestnut filly Chestnuts N Pearls has landed an unfavourable draw of 17 in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson over 1200m. She has just been kept ticking over since her maiden over the course and distance. The runner up in that race Durban Blues finished second on the poly on Friday night, so the form was not greatly franked, but Drier pointed out that Chestnut N Pearls “could not have won easier.”

Drier is also hoping that Jet Aglow ca repeat her third place finish of last year in the Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint over 1200m. She also worked on the grass last Tuesday and Cormack was very happy, although this is largely being seen as a preparation outing for races like the Tibouchina and Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, which are over more suitable distances.

Breeder: Mr G C Jolliffe & Mrs J A Jolliffe

ABOUT Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion (Grade 1):

First run in 1963 as the Smirnoff Plate, this is the top two-year-old sprint in the country and some of the finest speed horses in the land have added their names to the roll of honour. Among them was one of the most magnificent thoroughbred specimens bred in South Africa, National Currency, who went on to beat some of the world’s best in Dubai.

ROLL OF HONOUR:

2014

Drier recorded his third straight win in the R600 000, Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Medallion when the Seventh Rock colt Guiness got the better of favourite Carry On Alice to win by a neck. The pair had joined issue for a titanic battle over the final 100m with Anton Marcus keeping Guineas running strongly under a powerful ride.

 2013

The Tsogo Sun Medallion saw another outstanding performance by the Dennis Drier-trained Captain Of All who won by a length from Willow Magic, Captain’s reserve and Kochka giving Drier his third win in this prestigious juvenile race four years. Captain Of All had come under pressure from Willow Magic in the closing stages and shifted under the pressure but he fought on for the win and the pair put five lengths between themselves and Captain’s Reserve.
