De Kock troops ready to fire

Mike de Kock’s leading troops for the Festival Of Speed meeting at Scottsville on Saturday have all eaten up well and are in fine fettle after traveling from Johannesburg to Summerveld on Wednesday.

His Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint contender Moofeed was prepared out of Summerveld and the rest, Alboran Sea, Muwaary, Entisaar and Shaama, were all prepared out of Randjesfontein.

De Kock’s Summerveld assistant Nathan Kotzen said about Moofeed, who was punished five points for a narrow second in the Listed In Full Flight Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville last time out, “He has had two recent gallops in company and did well, but it’s a strong field.”

Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint contender Alboran Sea is on her way to being named Equus Champion Sprinter, having won both the Gr 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championships and Gr 1 Computaform Sprint, both over 1000m. She is just as effective over 1200m as she won the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship at Scottsville as a two-year-old last year. She recorded a blistering time despite the slightly soft going in the Computaform Sprint and can use her early pace to overcome her tricky draw of nine under Anthony Delpech.

The Australian-bred Muwaary was not very well away on debut but still sauntered to a hand and heels nine length victory in an excellent time over 1200m at The Vaal. The only downside is that the form has not been franked. He has a plum draw of five in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion and Delpech rides.

Australian-bred Entisaar didn’t beat a vintage field when winning the Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein, but the impressive point was that she jumped from an unfavourable draw and went through the worst going yet still won emphatically in the slightly soft going. She hasn’t raced on fast ground before, but her only defeat was in very soft going so she will probably appreciate a firmer surface. She jumps from a draw of eight, but interestingly Johnny Geroudis replaces chief stable jockey Anthony Delpech, who will be aboard Shaama.

Shaama is also an Australian-bred and showed good cruising speed from a favourable draw in the Gr 1 SA Nursery over 1160m, before fighting on doggedly to go down by a length. Her time was just over a second quicker than Entisaar’s, although she did carry 2,5kg less. She jumps from a tricky draw of 12.

Sheik's Brashee (Nkosi Hlophe)

Don’t ignore Sheik’s Brashee

Mike Miller believes that his 50/1 shot Sheik’s Brashee can “run a place at least” in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint at Scottsville on Saturday.

He said about the four-year-old gelding by The Sheik, who has improved from a merit rating of 91 to 103 this season, “He loves that track and has been doing very well and working well, he has really come into himself and has not put a foot wrong. He was very unlucky to not finish second or third last time (in the Listed In Full Flight Stakes over 1100 at Scottsville) as he was cleaned up just as he was doing his best work. He is drawn next to Flyfirstclass who has given us a lead before and I think he will run in the first four.”

An interesting point about the his unlucky In Full Flight Stakes run was that the winner Gulf Storm as given a nine point raise, while Sheik’s Brashee avoided any raise at all back in fifth.

Sheik’s Brashee has landed a plum draw of four. The winner of this race has come from draw five in the last two runnings and from draw three the year before that.

He will be ridden by accomplished apprentice Mathew Thackeray, who will obviously not be able to take his 2,5kg claim, but he has ridden this horse before.

Sean Tarry

Tarry troops primed

National champion trainer elect Sean Tarry said yesterday that he was happy with all of his charges for Saturday’s big Festival Of Speed meeting and they were shortly due to travel down to KZN.

His Gr 1 Allan Robertson contender Swift Sarah started at even money on debut and, although she didn’t beat much, the race was against older fillies and the manner of her six length victory suggests she has a bright future. The Dynasty filly showed good gate speed as well as cruising speed and produced a telling kick at the business end to draw away and win easing up. She jumps from draw 11 and Raymond Danielson keeps the ride.

Gold Medallion contender Donny G, a colt by the previous winner of this race Seventh Rock, showed excellent gate speed on debut over 1200m at the Vaal and then stayed on well to beat a weak field comfortably after being prominent throughout. His time was slightly slower on the same day than the Gr 1 Allan Robertson contender Pacifica and more than a second slower than the Gold Medallion contender Muwaary. However, he does look to have plenty of scope and on Saturday he jumps from a plum draw of two. Danielson has replaced Piere Strydom, who has now been left without a ride by the scratching of the Gavin van Zyl-trained Isca.

Tarry will have an excellent chance of Gr 1 glory in the Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint over 1200m with his top class Captain Al filly Carry On Alice. She faces her nemesis Alboran Sea, who beat her in the Allan Robertson last year as well as in the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championships over 1000 and the Gr 1 Computafor Sprint this year. However, she is drawn three compared to Alboran Sea’s nine so this should play in her favour, especially as she has excellent gate speed and early pace. Regular pilot S’Manga Khumalo is aboard.

His former Gr 1 SA Nursery and Gr 2 Dingaans winner Willow Magic will also have an outstanding chance of success in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sprint over 1200m. He was a runner up as a two-year-old in the Gold Medallion, beaten a length by Captain Of All. He was beaten 2,65 lengths by Captain Of All last time out in the Gr 1 Computaform Sprint over 1000m at Turffontein, but will now be receiving 6kg from the latter. He has a good draw of four with Piere Strydom up, although considering that the field tends to track over to that side these days he will need to jump quicker than he did in his last two starts. He has jumped well on occasion, but does prefer to be loaded late.

Tarry’s two other Gr 1 Tsogo Sun contenders, Zambezi River and Bichette, will also have plenty of supporters. Zambezi River, a good looking colt by Trippi, has a touch of class and his best form has been from 1000m to 1400m. The tough Scottsville track should be ideal and the draw of ten is not too bad. He is officially 1kg under sufferance but has only had seven career outings to date and has given the impression that the best has not yet been seen of him. Tarry has wisely avoided the City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint with Bichette, as Carry On Alice and Alboran Sea look difficult to oppose. This three-year-old Western Winter filly was, by the trends on the day, drawn on the wrong side last time out in the Gr 2 Camellia Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein, but that didn’t stop her winning by six lengths. She only carried 54,5kg on that occasion but was given a massive 16 point raise and now has to lug the same weight in Gr 1 company, despite being the only filly in the field. As a horse with a lot of pace, her draw of three is ideal, and she should be right up there. She has won over 1400m before so should stay all the way to the line, although her high merit rating of 108 makes it tough for her in this handicap event against the boys.

Gulf Storm (Nkosi Hlophe)

Gulf Storm looks to have things in his favour

Brett Crawford runs Gulf Storm in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m on Saturday.

This four-year-old Sail From Seattle gelding earned bold black type for the first time in his 19th career outing last time out when winning the Listed In Full Flight Stakes over 1100m at Scottsville, so Crawford appears justified in being stunned by the handicapper’s decision to raise him nine merit rated points. That is the equivalent of 4,5kg, meaning he will now have to carry second topweight and give two Gr 1 winners 2,5kg each.

He hoped that he would be proven wrong on Saturday. Gulf Storm appeared to relish the tough Scottsville track in that last run and Crawford said, “He is doing very well, is fresh and fit and he has a nice draw.” Crawford’s Dynasty gelding De Kock “pulled up alright” after his disappointing tailed off last finish in the Gr 2 Betting World 1900 and the yard are “running bloods to try and find anything wrong, as it wasn’t his run.” However, he added that it could have just been a case of him not staying the trip.

Meanwhile, KRA Fillies Guineas winner Alexis is on track for the Gr 1 Woolavington 2000 on Saturday week and impressive recent winner Maybe Yes is doing well ahead of the Tibouchina on her way to the Gr 1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes.

Brutal bang on track

Cape Trainer Joey Ramsden was happy with the preparation of his Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint contender Brutal Force ahead of Saturday’s Festival Of Speed meeting at Scottsville and also revealed that his top class three-year-old colt Act Of War had travelled “exceptionally well” from Cape Town ahead of his engagement in the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge on June 6.

Ramsden said that Brutal Force had already been fit from his two Kenilworth runs over 1400m and 1000m in April and early May respectively. In the first of them the three-year-old  Western Winter gelding had “travelled a bit hard from a wide draw” but still ran a good second and he then came out and won a “really nice race” over 1000m, beating the useful older horse Castlethorpe on weight for age terms by 2,25 lengths.

The big horse subsequently travelled well from Cape Town, arriving at Summerveld about two weeks ago, and has been working well at Summerveld. Brutal Force was gelded after his win in the R1 million Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) Stakes over 1200m at Kenilworth on January 24 as he weighed over 600kg. He touched off the promising Zambezi River in the CTS Stakes and Ramsden believes that, although he gets 1400m, the 1200m is likely his best trip.

The powerful chestnut has a tricky draw of 14 to overcome on Saturday, just one inside of the draw of 15 that his full brother Red Ray carried to second place last year. However, his 52,5kg weight is 4kg less than Red Ray was asked to carry. Greg Cheyne, fresh from his win in the Gr 2 Betting World 1900, rides. Brutal Force is sure to be fine tuned in his third run after a layoff and gelding.

Laird has the winning formula

Charles Laird will be attempting to win the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint (formerly known as the Golden Horse Casino Sprint) over 1200m at Scottsville on Saturday for the fourth year in succession and the fifth time overall when he sends out the defending champion Normanz.

Laird said, “His preparation has been very good and he is very well. The only small concern is the draw but it is something we will have to deal with. He is well weighted, between 52kg and 55kg is where you want to be for this race.”

Normanz will be attempting to make it three years in succession that sons of Var have won this big race and with 54kg he carries just 1kg more than he did as a three-year-old last year. Laird’s previous two winners of this race, four-year-old Delago Deluxe and three-year-old Contador, carried 54kg and 53,5kg respectively and his 2002 winner Hinterland carried only 50kg. However, his last three Golden Horse Casino Sprint winners have jumped from barrier positions three, five and five, while Normanz will have to overcome barrier 14  this year on a course where the low draws tend to have an advantage these days, partly because the jockeys usually track over towards  the inside rail.

Normanz, who is only three merit rated points higher than he was last year, has plenty of speed and led from start to finish last year under Athandiwe Mgudlwa. This year he will have four-times South African champion jockey Anton Marcus aboard. Even Marcus’s mastery was unable to overcome a draw of 15 on last year’s favourite Red Ray, who finished a 1,5 length second. However, he and Laird are sure to have a game plan under their sleeves.

Normanz works on his own due to his speed and had a good grass gallop at Summerveld last Thursday. He did his final serious work yesterday (Wednesday).

Generalissimo (Liesl King)

Drier happy with his troops

Masterful Summerveld trainer Dennis Drier has a fine chance of adding to his phenomenal record at Scottsville’s Festival Of Speed meeting this Saturday as he sends out five contestants in Gr 1 1200m events and most of them will be in with definite chances.

Drier has won four of the last five runnings of the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion, including the last three in succession, and he also won the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint, now known as the City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint, in 2011.

Drier has a fine chance of landing his fifth Medallion in six years with the ultra-classy Seventh Rock colt Seventh Plain and this rangy bay has landed a plum low draw.

Anton Marcus rode him in his final grass gallop last Tuesday and Drier was happy with what he saw. He added, “Anton didn’t say much so I hope he was happy, if he was happy I’m happy.”

Seventh Plain overcame a high draw of eight in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb over 1100m at Scottsville on April 26 and won effortlessly. He will appreciate the extra 100m on Saturday and further. His only defeat in three starts was when giving the speedy sprinting type Buckinghampshire 3kg in the Listed 1000m race on J&B Met day and only losing by 1,25 lengths.

Drier’s former Medallion winner Captain Of All has the ability to join the like of J J The Jet Plane and Earl Of Surrey as horses that have carried topweight to victory in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m. He was very impressive indeed in his penultimate start over 1000m at Scottsville, so clearly enjoys this track, and in his last start in the Gr 1 Computaform Sprint over 1000m at Turffontein he was by no means disgraced when third, four lengths behind Alboran Sea and Carry On Alice. The latter pair of fillies put in fantastic performances that day and Captain Of All was well clear of four other Gr 1 winners in the field.

Captain Of All worked on his own in his final grass gallop under Sean Cormack at Summerveld on Friday and Drier was very happy. He said, “When they are fit they don’t need to work with other horses, the art is not to overcook them.”

Drier “couldn’t be happier” with Generalissimo, who had his final grass gallop at Summerveld last Tuesday under Keagan de Melo. De Melo was unable to commit to the ride and Warren Kennedy might be aboard. This classy sort will attempt to make it three years in succession that the Tsogo Sun Sprint has been won by three-year-old sons of the amazing stallion Var. Generalissimo broke the Kenilworth course record over 1200m last November before failing to stay the 1600m of the Selangor Cup. He then finished lame after taking a slight sideways knock over 1200m. Drier, with the support of owners Nick and Ben Jonsson, excercised caution by not running him again in Cape Town, and it paid dividends as he bounced back with an impressive win over 1200m on the Greyville poly last month.

Barbosa is another from the yard that could get into the final field after an excellent 2,25 length defeat of the useful Muscatt over the Tsogo Sun course and distance in April, despite giving the latter 5kg. He broke the class record that day despite carrying 60kg. The five-year-old Captain Al gelding was raised to a 104 merit rating and Drier said, “The way he won they can’t leave him out, especially as Muscatt won next time out in a canter. He has had a few niggles and problems but has been a real old soldier.”

Drier’s two-year-old Horse Chestnut filly Chestnuts N Pearls has landed an unfavourable draw of 17 in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson over 1200m. She has just been kept ticking over since her maiden over the course and distance. The runner up in that race Durban Blues finished second on the poly on Friday night, so the form was not greatly franked, but Drier pointed out that Chestnut N Pearls “could not have won easier.”

Drier is also hoping that Jet Aglow ca repeat her third place finish of last year in the Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Sprint over 1200m. She also worked on the grass last Tuesday and Cormack was very happy, although this is largely being seen as a preparation outing for races like the Tibouchina and Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, which are over more suitable distances.

Kingvoldt-and-Fayd'Herbe (Liesl King)

Kingvoldt for the upset

Justin Snaith believes that a newcomer to his yard, Kingvoldt, could cause a big surprise in the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint over 1200m at Scottsville on Saturday.

He said that the Western Winter colt had arrived at his Summerveld barn in very good condition and that his previous trainer Joey Ramsden already had him aimed at the Tsogo Sun Sprint. He added that he had done very well in a workout on Friday morning at Summerveld under his regular pilot Bernard Fayd’Herbe.

Kingvoldt’s three career wins have all been over 1200m. Another point that gives him a big form shout is that he finished a head behind Gulf Storm the last time he tried this distance, at Kenilworth in February, and is now 5kg better off.

A lot will now depend on how he draws tomorrow (Monday).

Snaith’s five-year-old Var mare Varikate has been kept ticking over since finishing a four length second to Jet Belle in the Gr 3 Poinsettia Stakes on April 26. The latter race is over the same 1200m course and distance as Saturday’s Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint and Snaith was hoping she could repeat her fourth place finish in the latter race, although she has unfortunately drawn high in 17 as opposed to her seven draw from last year.

Captain Of All - Nkosi Hlophe

Captain confirmed for Tsogo Sun Sprint

The Dennis Drier yard have said that Captain Of All is on track for the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint to be run over 1200m at Scottsville on May 23. His participation will have an important effect on the weights as he is merit rated 116 and is set to carry 60kg, so without him the weights will all have to be dragged upward.

The two Gr 1-winning fillies Alboran Sea and Fly By Night are second highest in the weights, but are more likely to run in the weight for age Gr 1 City Of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint. The next horse in the weights is Gulf Storm, who was punished nine points by the handicapper for winning the Listed In Full Flight Handicap over 1100m. Gulf Storm, who appeared to relish the tough Scottsville track, is set to carry 56,5kg.

The two stand outs at the weights are the former Gr 1 SA Nursery winner Willow Magic from the yard of champion elect trainer Sean Tarry and last year’s Tsogo Sun Sprint winner Normanz from the yard of Charles Laird. Both horses are set to carry a mere 54kg, amazingly light for respective Gr 1 winners. However, Tarry said recently that Willow Magic’s participation might depend on the draw he lands and he could otherwise be rerouted to the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m on June 6.

Normanz missed what would have been a useful preparation in the recent 600m dash race at Scottsville, which had to be cancelled due to a rain affected track. However, he only has to carry 1kg more than last year, when leading throughout and producing a good kick under Athandiwe Mgudlwa. Laird is going for his fourth successive victory in this race and has won an incredible ten Gr 1 races at this festival with nine different horses. Laird’s other two recent Tsogo Sun Sprint winners, Delago Deluxe in 2012 and Contador in 2013, carried 54kg and 53,5kg respectively, so Normanz has the right looking weight again this year.

However, before Laird’s three victories the race was dominated by top class sorts who had to lug big weights. In 2007 Kildonan carrying 57,5kg touched off his three-year-old contemporary Mythical Flight, who carried topweight of 60kg. J J The Jet Plane carried topweight to victory as a three-year-old in 2008 and again carried topweight when winning in 2010. In 2009 Earl Of Surrey won with topweight and Shea Shea carried 58kg to victory in 2011. Captain Of All is already a Gr 1 winner at this track having won the Tsogo Sun Medallion as a two-year-old and the manner of his win at Scottsville in his penultimate start suggests he could well join some of those aforementioned stalwarts by triumphing with topweight on May 23.

2014 TSOGO SUN SPRINT (GRADE 1)

Horse: Normanz

Jockey: Athandiwe Mgudlwa

Trainer: Charles Laird

Owners: Mrs I Jooste & Mr MJ Jooste

Breeder: Avontuur Throughbred Farm

ABOUT: Tsogo Sun Sprint (Grade 1)

Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, the centre of speed in South African racing, hosts the Golden Horse Sprint race day for the 52nd time on May 24 and, as in all the years past, will undoubtedly provide the exciting and highly competitive clashes it is renowned for.

ROLL OF HONOUR:

2014

Trainer Charles Laird pulled off a perfect training feat when the three-year-old Var gelding Normanz powered across the line to win the R1-million, Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint at Scottsville on Saturday.

Owned by Ingrid and Markus Jooste, Normanz won by 1.5 lengths from another Jooste runner Red Ray from the Joey Ramsden stable.

2013

There were some top sprinters in the main feature event but one of the lesser fancied runners was the Charles Laird-trained Contador that had run poorly in his previous race and had been gelded just five weeks before the Scottsville race.

Contador settled early as Barbosa made the running but going through the 300m mark he accelerated and moved with strong finish gaining the lead and winning by a length from Wild Type, Merhee and Desert Sheik.

2012

A day of mixed results that led to a Place Accumulator payout of R6 000 was enjoyed by a large crowd who cheered the three-year-old Australian-bred colt Delago Deluxe when he stormed home under champion jockey Anton Marcus to win the R600 000 Golden Horse Casino Sprint for trainer Charles Laid carrying the famous green, yellow and black silks of owners Ingrid and Markus Jooste.

Delago Deluxe, that was declared the best turned out horse in the race, had returned to Scottsville for the first time after a year where he had won the Tsogo Sun Medallion as a two-year-old giving him a perfect record of two Grade 1 victories in his two races at the Pietermaritzburg track.

2011

The Golden Horse Casino Sprint was won by the Geoff Woodruff-trained three-year-old Shea Shea to give the Gauteng conditioner his second win in the race in three years. He had won with Earl Of Surrey in 2009. The National Emblem colt under Anthony Delpech finished ahead of August Rush and Polar Moon.

2010

JJ The Jet Plane, trained by the Vaal-based Lucky Houdalakis, wrote his name into the record books again at Scottsville yesterday under Pierre Strydom when he became the first horse since Dambuster in 1984 to reclaim the Grade 1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint crown.

Houdalakis brought him back slowly after he had come out of quarantine. He only had his first gallop in February and his preparation was also effected by unseasonal rain.

2009

Earl of Surrey, ridden by Johnny Geroudis, posted an emphatic victory in the Grade 1 R600 000 Golden Horse Casino Sprint, shortly after Geroudis had bagged another grade 1 win in the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship earlier in the day at Scottsville.

The Zimbabwean bred Earl Of Surrey won by two and a half length, despite carrying top weight, from Thunder Key, and the Mike Bass trained duo of Gaultier and Blue Tiger filling the balance of the places.
